Has there been cases of anesthesia accidental deaths?!
Question: if so how many per year
Answers: if so how many per year
I do not know how many per year, but, there HAVE been accidental deaths due to anesthesia, for certain.
Of course, and we call that "malpractice".
The actual numbers are difficult to know, as many, many lawsuits are without merit, and not all malpractice results in litigation.
Death under anesthesia from any cause is extremely rare. There is risk any time we give ANYONE anesthesia, but some patients are at higher risk than others. We classify all of our patients into a risk category, known as the ASA physical status (ASA for short), and each patient is classified as being from ASA1 through 5 (6 being an organ donor).
We concentrate on our patients' safety, and have multiple layers of monitoring and alarms, along with backup plans and equipment to keep people safe.
And, we do a remarkably good job of it.
