Once MRSA infected can it be dormant for months then come back?!

Question: Granddaughters infected at relatives house. After healing from their infections from 2 months ago...a boil has popped up again. Should we look for another source of contamination or can the infection go away only to remain in their system and come back later? Can't find the answer to this question anywhere.
