Question: really get rid of the smell /clean you(your skin clothes, etc) or does it just mask the odor, or smell. This is being asked just as trivia, and due to the fact that there is so much fragranced soap / body wash /detergent on the market... :) :)

Soap is made of harsh chemicals that do clean, but with a price. Most leave a residue behind that can cause contact dermatitis, asthma and allergy symptoms and environmental pollution when it is washed down the drain. Treatment facilities cannot remove these chemicals (such as triclosan), and these synthetic fragrances (phthalates) also increase the risk of birth defects in male offspring, reduced fertility, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, liver damage, thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, and increase the resistance of bacteria to anti-biotics. Triclosan even creates chloroform gas when mixed with chloronated water - you and your family get to breathe in a KNOWN human carcinogen. Recently, there are published reports that many of our cleaning products could actually CAUSE asthma in addition to the research showing that these synthetic fragrances increase asthma attacks and allergy symptoms.

I just use a cup of baking soda in the wash with a few drops of lavender essential oil mixed with a tablespoon of olive oil in the rinse. I stick to natural soaps and lotions without synthetic fragrances and have been researching, making and selling natural products for over 15 years. And I clean with natural solutions.

My son developed asthma soon after he was born. I got rid of all the conventional crap and switched to natural (including organic food). We all feel better and TA-DA, no more asthma or eczema, headaches or sinus infections.

Yes, soap really does clean. Fragrance is just a plus. I like the lightest fragrance myself. I suppose plain water does clean but can't imagine it does as good as soap.

Soap is a complex molecule with one end largely polar and the other non-polar. Due to this property, the non-polar end is attracted to and effectively surrounds other non-polar things such as grease/grime. Since water is a polar molecule, the polar end of the molecules, sticking out of the grease (after surrounding the "target" entirely) are attracted to the water and get washed away. This is why you can't simply wash oil/grease off of your hands without soap.

Fragrance is simply an added bonus, in actuality soap that hasn't been treated doesn't smell as pleasant as one would believe.
