What to do for a child with a cold when the child has severe allergies and asthm!

Question: With OTC meds now not being recommended for children really under the age of 6, what can you do to ease the cough in order to keep the lungs from becoming inflamed causing the child to end up having bronciolitis (which always happens to my kids) or asthma attacks. They, ages 4 and 2 yrs, have nebulizers to try to prevent attacks with albuterol and pulmicort, but have no inhalers to stop an acute attack. They also are on Zyrtec and singular from their allergy specialist b/c they are allergic to enviromental things and other things that can kill them. I do the steam treatments in the bathroom, the vapor rub, and the vapor plug-ins to help with the congestion that even their allergy meds can't help really with a cold but still it doesn't ease a cough. I am NOT looking for someone to tell me to stop prescriptions and go all natural with my kids b/c with everything they're allergic to it's WAY too risky. please be polite and respectful with ur answers and try to help not put down others.

The person who posted this "The allergies and asthma aren't going to kill your children" is WRONG. People DO die from Asthma! Especially severe sudden attacks.

My son (now 28) had allergies and asthma so severe, we lived in a sterile environment for 5 years! He still has Asthma, but has maybe one attack a year.

As for the cough, yeah, OTC med's aren't being recommended to young children much. You could try a warm honey tea if there are no food sensitivities (you can get caffeine free tea). Keep the air moist. Dry air really triggers coughing. Laying flat in bed doesn't help either. Always prop up one end of the bed. I found that helped with the coughing too.

If possible, call a pharmacist if you can't reach your doctor. He or she may be able to give you more advice.

Good luck! I know EXACTLY how you feel!

We also have a son with the same problems, the best you can do it use a vapor machine (mist) in there room. He's
now 27 and still has problems but not as bad as it was when he was younger. There are only 7 things that his is not allergic to. The best of luck to you and your kids.

My son was born 14 years ago. He developed asthma, eczema, allergies, rashes, colds, ear infections, and the list goes on. The first year was a nightmare. Sleepless nights, constant crying. I know what you are going through, but with two children, it's even worse for you than it was for me.

I started doing research and found that the chemical fragrances/plasticizers, phthalates, in cleaning and body care products have been proven to increase the frequency, duration and severity of asthma attacks and allergy symptoms. In addition, the chemical preservatives and colorants in our conventional food supply have also been shown to cause asthma attacks. I got all this crap out of my house before my son was 18 months old. There were no more asthma attacks, no more allergies, no more eczema, no more ear infections, and we were all finally able to sleep.

My husbands family thought I was a freak, and regularly made fun of me for raising my kid 'au naturale'. I was a laughingstock. On Easter, I told the family that Calvin could have cake, donuts, or other goodies without the chemical colorants - but nothing other than those things. I went the bathroom. When I came back downstairs, Calvin was happily knawing on a jello egg (jello formed in a plastic, egg-shaped mold). I packed up our things and we left immediately. I had to be sure that I had albuterol, the hot water heater was good and hot and get the crock pot heating in his room with some white pine needles. We ended up with an asthma attack that lasted for three days - until that jello was out of his system.

We slowly weaned him back onto chemical-laden food - with Lucky Charm marshmellows, just one or two at a time and increased the amount over the course of a year. I still use nothing but natural cleaners, eat roughly 50% organic and use only vegetable-oil and essential oil based soaps and lotions that I had to learn to make myself since we couldn't afford the expensive stuff in the natural stores.

Bash natural all you want, but my son hasn't had an asthma attack, eczema outbreak, hives, strange rashes, allergies or even an ear infection since.

If you do decide to remove the chemicals that are likely causing the allergen over-load in your children, you can't stop the meds right away. If you do, you'll send them into a 'rebound' - the worst asthma attack you've ever seen in your life!

Get rid of the chemicals and you'll be able to wean your babies off the meds - and feel good knowing that you can sleep at night and your children are resting soundly.

Until then, you all get to suffer...

I wonder the side effects of all those drugs. Especially the newer ones that haven't been fully tested in children for long-term biological effects, maybe you should too. I hope you've looked.

The allergies and asthma aren't going to kill your children. The chemicals that cause the asthma and allergies are the problem. Get rid of the source of the problem and you get rid of the problem.

ADDED:
The following poster is blaming the consequences rather than the cause. I do realize that children (more and more of them) are dying from asthma every year BECAUSE of our toxin-laden society. Think of it this way, if you are shot and bleed to death, did you die because you were shot or because you bled to death? Which is responsible for your death, the cause or the consequences. Get rid of the cause, then you get rid of the consequences.

Sterilizing an environment with KNOWN toxins and allergens and asthma triggers is not going to SOLVE the problem. My brother spent three winters of his life in the hospital in an air bubble because of asthma symptoms. FOR REAL. When my mother finally quit smoking in the house, his asthma dropped down to manageable with meds. The CAUSE for his hospital stay was the consequences of my mother smoking and polluting his environment.
