My girlfriend has diabetes..how do i cope??!

Question: the doctor says she was born with it and now her symptoms are showing and she's only 17. the doctor also said she lost weight due to the fact that her blood sugar levels were too high making it unable for her body to take in the nutrients needed for growth!! and her high sugar level is also caused by high stress levels??? how can i cope with it?!? We have been fighting a lot a few weeks back but i've been giving in most of the time recently understanding that she was falling ill and then a few weeks later she is in the hospital diagnosed with it?! how do i cope with this? i feel that it's my fault her stress levels are high!

It isn't your fault that she is diabetic. Also, diabetes is NOT caused by stress. Type 1 is just something that happens, people aren't sure why. Your girlfriend will be freaked out for awhile about it, but after a few months she will become used to it and it won't even be (too much) of an issue. She will need to eat more healthy, test her blood sugar, and just keep an eye on herself.

Do your best not to fight with her right now and just be supportive & understanding. Look up information about Diabetes so you know what's going on with her.

i think she has a harder time coping with it than u do. as a boyfrd, what u can do is support her and remind her to take her injections on time and check her blood glucose levels. stress hormones do raise blood glucose so u might want to chill out a bit and not fight with her all the time.

stress hormones increase sugar in the blood, so may harry up this disease, but at the end it is not your fault, take care, prevention is very important, diet exercise

Her life just turned upside down.Just be there for her.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas her emotions are all up in the air while her body is trying to produce or the lack of this vital hormone I was married 15 years to a diabetic he was diagnosed at the age of 10 I learned when he became arguemeitive it was time to check sugar not the time to take anything personal or discuss important matters etc, etc. it is hard to be a partner to a diabetic while if it is uncontroled can be chalenge dont be discouraged while alot of times she will not remember the arguement its not your faulght my sugestion is to read up on the disease itself and become empowered and also a good support system helps too

Being 17 IS stressful. But Diabetes is a disease, and high sugar levels are caused by the intake of carbohydrates and her bodies inability to process them correctly. Your fighting with her did not make her a diabetic. Right now, she is probably overwelmed by the changes that she will have to incorporate into her way of living. Just be supportive right now and give her a litttle bit of slack.

I am sure she is devestated with this news, it means lots of changes in her life. Try your best to support her. Learn to help her do the things she needs to do. READ, READ, READ. You can never know too much about diabetes. Try to understand too that high blood sugar levels can make people testy, and the process of getting adjusted to insulin can be very overwhelming and confusing. I am sorry for all you are going through, both of you. It's not easy for anyone. There are more challenges facing you both, so stay strong.

Best wishes.
