If a defibrillator is firing, danger is already there. It's job is to correct a dangerous rhythm that the heart is in. It will continue to fire until the rhythm is corrected.
Dangerous in comparsion to what? Dying!? I would say you can be shocked as many times as needed to save your life. I mean, the alternative is not sounding much better.
I think the automated systems do two times. By that time, the ambulance should be on the scene.
If the eighth time doesn't bring you back, it doesn't matter how dangerous it is. If it does bring you back, you'll be in pain. But it doesn't break bones.
