How do they perform a biopsy? Is it with a huge needle and does it hurt?!

Question: "they squish your breast, and use a air driven 'needle' to punch a hole into that area. they then insert a smaller needle with suction and such out the area in question"

Utter rubbish. They do no such thing!
It's a very quick procedure. You lie down on the treatment couch. You don't get a local anaesthetic beforehand. The needle is very small and the doctor will insert it into the lump for a couple of seconds and then take it out again.
It might be a little bit sore, but each person's perception of pain is different. So please ignore all the horror stories from people who don't know what they are talking about.
Hope this helps.

A biopsy of what and where? It makes a difference. Anyway it shouldn't hurt much. Best luck.

First of all, they saw your legs off and then put a huge needle in your eye.

Depends what they're taking a biopsy of and what kind of biopsy it is.

When I had a needle biopsy done on a breast lump they numb the area so it doesn't hurt. The needle isn't "huge", it's a bit like a tube and they 'punch' the lump and it takes out a bit of the tissue - a bit like coring an apple. It didn't hurt at all.

The site below may help

Not necessarily with a needle, I'm afraid. Sometimes they have to just cut a tiny bit out and then it requires a little stitch. I have experienced both ways on different parts of me! Obviously, this depends where they are taking the sample from.

Ah....from the breast, you have added. Now this is a doddle. They didn't numb me before they did it, but it still didn't hurt - honestly! I have had several cysts drained using a syringe too and honestly it is pain free without any kind of anaesthetic. It sounds daft, but it's true.

It depends on where you're doing the biopsy. I had two biopsies done; one in the neck, and another bone marrow biopsy.

The neck biopsy was painless. They gave me a teeny injection to freeze my skin, and they took out a piece of tissue that they thought could be cancer by using basic surgical tools. I was awake the whole time and didn't feel a thing.

The Bone Marrow Biopsy is what you should be worried about. That thing hurt like HELL! What they do is they ask you to lie down on your side, they freeze your skin and poke a needle into your bone. They then extract a little bit of bone marrow and you're done. The only thing is, you can't really "freeze" the inside of your bone so for about 3-4 seconds you'll be in alot of pain, but then it'll go away.

No, I believe it's a thin hollow needle usually. It won't hurt more than a pinch! Don't be scared!

I got a fine needle biopsy on a lymph node on neck and it was no bother, it takes about 15 minutes, there is other biopsy's they do with general anaesthetics, if its internal and they want to remove it.

Such amusing replies...lol

Naturally, where the biopsy is taken does make a difference of procedures. In most all cases, a needle is used if the procedure is external. The needle is coated with freezone that relieves and numbs the pain. You will feel a little sore after the freezone wears away later, but not near as sore as after having a tooth removed... It is a minimal soreness and nothing to really have fears for...

However, many doctors tend to request a uterus biopsy with having no positive location in mind. If this is your situation then be sure to get a second opinion. As the biopsy sample is just a millimeter or so, and the uterus area is expansive, it would seem the doctor requesting a biopsy is simply fishing in the dark if not having found something to fish for with the toys they use for such. The uterus is a sensitve area to play in and introducing even minimal scar tissue as result of a biopsy could come back to haunt some day. A second opinion is always best for any type of biopsy even if just from a general practice doctor and not a GYN specialist...

You do have some wonderful answers here with respounding experience so read them with care and do not panic or worry...

Best wishes...

I had a lump on my back the size of a golf ball. I was asked if I wanted a needle biopsy or to have the lump removed. I said remove the golf ball. They sprayed the area with air freeze and removed two grapefruit sized lymph nodes. I did not feel a thing and was awake the whole time. I discovered that I had Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. They got me into remission for 7+ years now. Never had pain or discomfort.
