When one takes accutane, one has to have labs drawn every month to see how various levels are. Also when taking accutane if you're a female, you must be on two separate types of birth control and an additional lab to test your HCG (I'm pretty sure you knew that.)
But all of the patients that we've prescribed accutane to, they have ended with amazing results with full clears; of course if they were compliant with the treatment.
Speak to a dermatologist for treatment options and mention that you're interested with accutane, and see what he/she says.
It works very well. If you have severe acne it is often worth the side effect. You aren't going to take it forever.
My best friend took it about five years ago & it worked great for her. The only problem is that there are side effects, i.e. sun exposure can be really bad for your skin while taking it. She definately got rid of the majority of her pimples. I think that your friends brother was depressed for another reason...but I could be wrong! Good Luck!
My daughter took it her second year of college after trying everything else. She had regular blood tests while on it and had no side effects at all except dry mouth and lips. It worked great and it kept on working a few months after she stopped taking it. Her acne never came back (this is 5 years ago). She still has an occasional break-out. No one I know has had any bad problems with accutane...
