I have some questions about herpes.?!

Question: In October I was raped. I have not had sex since then. In the last few days I got bumps that were very painful and my lymph nodes swelled and became very painful. I went to the hospital and they looked and said it looked like herpes and prescribed me valtrex. I tried to probe them for information about this but they were very rude and said the best source of info was the net. I was wondering if herpes will stay confined to my genitals or if they can spread if i touched there and then another part of my body. If they can be spread to people in my house through touching something such as the toilet? And is there anything topical I can use for the excruciating discomfort. Any other information is helpful.

1st I want to say---I'm so sorry this happened to you! What a rotten, rotten thing.

I've been with my husband for over 20 years. I knew he had herpes when we were dating. But he takes Valtrex and we rarely ever even have to deal with it. With Valtrex working in your system, you should rarely be bothered by any outbreaks. I try not to share my husband's bath towel but that's about it.

I just looked up info. Looks like the first outbreak can be the worst and the first year afterward being the worst too with less outbreaks as time goes on. Look at the info here:

Good luck honey

Take the prescription that they gave you, it will help with the breakouts. As far as ointment, go to your dr and ask for an ointment that numbs. As far as spreading, not sure. The internet is really your best source. I believe that once the virus is in your system, it could be spread through fluids.

Genital herpes is spread through sexual contact and that only, never toilet seats etc. The first outbreak is generally your worst, the medication can help reduce the outbreak but it will not cure it. You can ask your doctor for a topical ointment that will help with pain. If you do indeed have genital herpes and you obviously do you will have it for the rest of your life.

First of all I'm sorry about the ordeal that you have been through. To answer your question, no you can not spread it by using the same toilet. You do want to wash your hands thouroughly after you touch yourself or use the bathroom because you can spread it to other places on your body. Like your eyes and mouth. The medicine should make you feel better as soon as the first couple of doses.

I would go to your regular GYN to get your questions answered. I try to research on the Internet and sometimes all it accomplishes is getting me more worked-up. You cannot get it from the toilet. I used ice to numb the pain. Always wash your hands. You can spread it to other moist areas of your body (mouth, eyes). You can check out the CDC website: www.cdc.gov

you may visit your doctor and get test.

since your genitals don't really touch the toilet seat i wouldn't worry about that, just by touching the toilet seat won't put anyone in danger. the genital kind is spread mostly through sexual contact or genital contact as well as sharing things like towels and bath water. the oral kind can be spread by sharing drinks, utensils, cigarettes, bottled watter, toothbrushes while u have a cold sore. genital herpes basically stays within the genital area but can spread to your thighs and buttocks. but if you touch your but then touch your mouth or eyesl then u could have cold sores. they wern't really being all that rude about going to the internet for info because i haven't sean too many doctors or hospitals with panphlets or info about herpes that they give to the public. u should look it up on webmd.com or mayoclinic.com to see what they symptoms are and generally what they look like.
