How bad are cigarettes?!

It depends entirely upon the person.

Come work in the hospital with me. You can see people who can't even get up to the toilet because of COPD, or have nasty looking legs because their veins are hard and infelxible. They are pooping on themselves because they can't even get up.

Smoking damage is sized up in something called "pack years." Look it up.

It's not even that it shortens your life...it's the crappy end years that sucks the most. If we weren't going for the cardiac problems at all (heart failure....which then leads to kidney trouble, "water in your lungs" and various other ailments) and sticking to respiratory, how would you feel if you had to fight for every breath you took? I've seen people in the end stages of COPD, where they literally fight for every breath. Eventually, they are put on morphine and anti-anxiety meds so they can die on the bed in peace (these drugs do not cause death, they enable the person to go without being in a panic).

Then there is lung cancer, but you already knew that. Throat cancer...there's something you can pretty much gaurantee yourself you'll die from since it is difficult to treat.

I wonder if you are trying to figure out when you should quit smoking or how long you can smoke before damage occurs. I will tell you, COPD is irreversible once you have it. Period. It is a downward spiral from there.

The good news is, is that if you quit, you're chances drop DRASTICALLY of dying from smoking related diseases.

Look up: COPD
Pack years
Heart failure
Cardiovascular Disease
Hypertension

I simply cannot believe people volunteer themselves to go through this.

If you smoke, I stronly urge you to stop. I believe everyone has the right to do it, but I'm telling you as a fellow human being, the road I think you might be on goes to a drop off cliff. Save yourself, if you smoke.

Have you ever seen the cross-section of a dead smoker's dissected lung? That would answer this question. Find a good cancer medical text.
