What causes people to cough?!

Question: A cough is a automatic reaction by your body to try to expel foreign entites from the lungs. The lungs are lined with thousands of tiny cilia that wave around and collect stuff out of the air. When these cilia find certain items however (such as dust) they activate a muscle reaction in your diaphram that causes you to cough.

You also cough when your lungs are infected from things like a cold, the flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia. In these cases, the lungs are trying (and usually failing) to expel the viral intruders because they are not in the air itself.

Coughing is a very violent activty and uses a lot of muscle power so it is also very tiring. If you cough for long periods, you can get sore and can actually start to damage things as the muscles lose strength due to fatigue.
