Meningitis, is an inflammation of the layer of membrane that surrounds the brain (the meninges). There are several kinds of diseases organisms that can cause this and they are listed as the following: atypical, viral, bacterial, and fungal. Other non infectious causes include cancers, lupus erythmatosus, and a variety of chemical exposures.

* Atypical meningitis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This can be fatal if not attended to quickly.

* Viral meningitis (aka aseptic meningitis) is generally caused by a class of viruses called Enteroviruses (coxsackieviruses and echoviruses), but are sometimes caused by Herpesvirus and Paramyxovirus (the mumps virus). Usually self limiting, most people won't even realize that they have had it, instead thinking that they perhaps had five to seven days of a bad cold or flu.

* Bacterial meningitis is a true medical emergency. Usually caused by Neisseria meningitidis (aka Meningococcus, though other organsims may include Streptococcus, Escherichia, Listeria, and Haemophilus) it is communicable and also rapidly fatal unless isolation and treatment is started quickly.

* Fungal meningitis is caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, and usually affects those that are immune compromised (congenital, iatrogenic, or acquired).

Judging from your description, you probably have a simple case of viral meningitis. You won't have to be hospitalized, nor will you need to "fight for your life" with this. It is not a serious infection at all. Again, many people who have it don't even realize it, instead thinking it to be a bad cold. Just maintain your fluid and nutritional intake, limit any physical activity and get plenty of rest until it passes (usually a week). Good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery.

You should be in a hospital if you do, not on the computer. It is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain. It can (and frequently does) cause permanent brain damage. I doubt you have it because you would be so sick right now that you wouldn't even be able to be on here, you would be in a hospital bed fighting for your life.

There's viral and bacterial meningitis. Note spelling. Both forms are VERY serious infections causing extreme pain up to death. Immediate medical intervention is needed. The high fevers associated with it can cause all kinds of different problems.

This link explains meningitis and gives some other links also. I was diagnosed as a meningitis carrier but I never did actually get the disease. Best wishes, Get well soon.
