The use of parenteral use of iron carries a risk of immediate severe and potentially lethal anaphylactoid reactions. Patients should be closely observed during and immediately after administration. The risk is enhanced for patients with known (medical) allergy. Therefore, it should only be administered when facilities and equipment for handling acute anaphylactic reactions are available, including an injectable 1:1000 adrenaline solution. Additional treatment with antihistamines and/or corticosteroids should be given as appropriate.

When parenteral iron therapy is considered essential in patients with asthma, allergic disorders and inflammatory disorders, the intramuscular route is to be preferred.

Hypotensive episodes may occur if intravenous injection is administered too rapidly.

If her doctor told her too then there shoudnt be any added risk in taking iron because her body needs it. But you can die from taking too much iron.

There are risks to anything. One has to weigh the benefits versus the potential risks. Sometimes iron is needed to help the body build up a person's blood. My husband has pancreatic cancer. He had several iron infusions IV with the goal of bringing up his red blood cell count. IV iron is absorbed better than iron by mouth in pill form. Share your concerns with the physician about your mom taking iron IV, but it is hopefully in her best interest that she take iron in this manner. See Link
