I was tested with a scope down my throat and the doc said?!

Question: I have acid reflux and if I take my medicine, the productive coygh and gasp will disappear.

I had been on ant-acids before the test and that didn't help...
How is it going to change now that he used some big doctor word on me...

I was takig tums and alka seltzer. He wants me on prilosec.

What is the difference here?

The tums will slow the acids down and give you some relief. Prilosec will stop acid production and give your stomach time to heal. If your dr. is saying prilosec, go with it.

Prilosec is stronger and works better on acid reflux.

Tums and alka seltzer give instant results but don't last long.

the difference would prolly be that what you are taking now does not work and the doc feels that the prilosec will work

same here, had the scope, etc, am on aciphex. Feeling much better, and I can tell when I miss a dose. I can hardly lie flat at night.

Tums and Alka Seltzer don't work in the same way, they only neutralize acid, while Prilosec blocks the pumps that pump out the gastric acid. You will notice a huge difference after taking Prilosec.

I myself take Prilosec. It actually stops your stomach from manufacturing acid. Unlike Rolaids and Tums that just neutralize the acid for a time. Believe me you will feel better.
I know I sure do. Good luck!!!

I take acid reflux meds everyday. Tums or Mylanta doesn't do much. I will guarantee one thing. Your problem won't be as bad if you can possibly cut way back on your eating. I used to take 4 Prilosec a day (20 mg each) and I ciut back on bad foods and ate more veggies and drank more water and now I only take 2 in the morning and 1 zantac at night. Try real hard to get this under control. You'll be much more comfortable.

The meds he is giving you are more powerful than the OTC things you had been taking....that's the difference. The "big doctor words" don't make any difference....the big doctor prescriptions do! Take them as prescribed and given them a chance.

The medication your doctor is talking about is a Proton pump inhibitor. It blocks acid production in the stomach, they are much more effective than an OTC antacid.

Did he give you a script? Sometimes items only available on scripts are much more effective than over the counter type medications.

They work under a completely different action. This should help. Why don't you just try it first?

Your body needs enzymes and such to digest food, and lots of clean water. You're getting a reaction to the food not digesting on time. The Tums and other "antacids" only temporarily remove the burning and don't even fix the problem. You need to flush your system like a radiator job.

I recommend a cleanser and then starting on taking minerals via a health food store/workout place that enhance your stomach's ability to digest what you're eating. Talk to someone in the know at Trader Joe's or a whole foods specialist. My twin brother just married a nurse who's into this stuff. He lost 200 pounds in three years without changing his workouts by changing his diet and taking seaweed to cleanse the cells.

Of course, don't start tossing down Taco Bell once you're on the right track a week later. This is a slow fix, but believe me, actually fixing the problem will be a wondrous thing.

I doubt it will disappear- it will not occur as often,

I would like to suggest that you ask the dr for a medication called REGLAN . I think you will have much better results . I also think you should ask if you need to have any tests on your Gallbladder.
i can almost bet --before long you willl have it removed

Prilosec is to help keep acid down so that you can stop the heartburn , cough and gasp you have been experiencing

Alka-seltzer and tums? you are taking next to nothing,,, and might as well not take it,
on the otherhand- i dont know how you can do it

So give the prilosec a chance and ask questions...

hope you feel better soon

Prilosec is a prescription.
