Psoriasis?!

Question: I have psoriasis and I'd like to know if any vitamins would help it? I don't want to take a prescription drug because the one they wanted to give me lowers your immune system. If anyone could help me in any way, I'd really appreciate it.

I have had psoriais for forty six years and the one thing I know for certain is there is no magic cure and there is no one single thing you can do to help.

A lot will depend of the type of psoriasis and the severity and location of the lesions.

Topical treatments are always the first port of call - creams lotions, potions for during and after shower/bath and there are millions out there its a matter of tryuing to see what works best for you. Keeping skin moisturised is essential.

UV light treatment...tanning beds work to an extent but if your psoriais is severe you may be offered PUVA

DMARDS - drugs like sulfasalazine, methotrexate are the old tried and trusted starter drugs can be effective. It is true that they lower the immune system but that is the nature of how they work. psoriasis is an auto-immune disease after all.

There is no proven link to any dietary factors although some individuals find that eliminating certain food groups can make a different. That is very much a trial and error personal thing but should always be discussed with your doctor.

If you eat a balanced diet you should have no need of additional supplementary vitamins.

Looking after your general health and well being is essential. There is evidence to suggest that flares can be triggered by excessive stress or certain infections.

There is a wealth of general information out there and several self help groups. You may find that things will work for a while and then become less effective...unfortunately that is the nature of the disease. I wish you luck on your journey...and lots of resmissions along the way.

Meghan, hello:
The proven supplement to improve psoriasis is Omega-3 oil (available at any pharmacy store in the Vitamin section).
Tanning in moderation helps, too.
From my experience I can also recommend the herbal (steroid-free) cream and spray combo from champori.com: it works better and faster than any other natural remedy I tried.
Best,
Bernadette

I have a friend with psoriasis and her doctor prescribed going to a sun bed once a week for a short time. It's really helped her.
