Ever heard of someone who compulsively messes with their eyelashes?!

Question: I do and it's called Trichotillomania http://www.trich.org/. It's like an extremely hard addiction that I almost can't control. I catch myself doing it without realizing it at times. Do you know anyone that has this rare disorder?

I graduated high school with a popular girl who constantly pulled out her lashes! I sat behind her in 11th grade English, and caught her doing it.... she was embarrassed when I noticed (for the first time) that she had NO eye lashes at all.
She also picked the skin around her finger nails and toe nails.
I always thought it was some type of nervous/ manic disorder.... I had no idea people actually compulsively hurt themselves in such a strange manner. I thought she was the only one!

I just checked out that site, and I wanted to thank you for being couragous enough to seek support. At least you are not alone in this....but I hope you can find a way to stop mutilating yourself soon.

Perhaps you need to develop a hobby like crocheting or needle point... or something.
Good luck, girl.... :)

is that really a condition?? i think i might have it...i constantly pick at my lips too. i don't think it's healthy.

some girl at my school pulled out all her eyelashes

I've never heard of that before, I'm very sorry, that must be hard. Personally I have an addiction to picking/chewing the skin on my fingers (on both sides of my fingernails) I do it constantly and they are hideous and bleeding or scabbed over most of the time. I wish there was some real treatment for this stuff. I do it very badly when bored or nervous, just idle hand-ed. Good luck to both of us eh?

My best friend and roomate had the same problem. She constantly rubbed or pulled at her lashes. She has none, and hasn't since high school, and she's 25. I don't know if she was every clinically diagnosed, but I know that she never used mascara. She always wore thing eye liner to kinda hide the fact that she didn't have any lashes. some people say it's just a nervous habit, like twirling your hair...

I've done it for about ten years, also my eyebrows and actual hair. Have broken the habit now by training myself against it but in times of anxiety will always go back to it. I even wore mittens every evening for about 6 months and tied elastic bands around my wrists which I flicked hard everytime I went to do it.

It's a nasty nasty nasty habit, which at so many stages in life has made me look like such a moron, I totally feel for you, but it is possible to get over the major part, just remember that your eyelashes will take atleast a few months to grow back so dont get disheartened and when they do grow back you'll be amazed at how good you'll end up looking and how much you'll love mascara. Also your doctor can help by addressing the stress trigger which makes you do this and if needs be put you on some anxiety control medication, I tried this for a while and it really helped, but its a good thing to discuss because for so long I thought i was a complete freak.
