I have a question concerning diabetes!?!

Question: I recently went to the doctor and he took a blood count because I asked for one to see if I have diabetes because it runs in the family and because I am overweight and I was concerned.

Well I dont know much about this but he sent me a letter in the mail saying to set up another appointment the paper just says

The result of your test HgbA1c is abnormal!

Does that mean he is gonna tell me I have Diabetes?
Im so worried. Please answer me I dont think I can wait until Wed. to find out lol!?

If he sent you a letter in the mail and doesn't want to see you until Wednesday, I guess you are not in any immediate danger. He may be going to tell you that you are "pre-diabetic" which means you will need to modify your lifestyle. Change your eating habits, more exercise etc. If you do those things, you can ward off diabetes.

Hmm research it. On the net :) I kinda have a family history of diabetes! I would be worried also! I hope your tests are fine and that u don't get diabetes!

The A1C test he mentioned is specific to the long-term level of blood sugar. It is a measure of sugar-coated hemoglobin. If it is above 6.0 (in whatever units they use), you are suspect of being either diabetic or pre-diabetic. I had this same test come up high on me.

The first thing you get is more tests. Unless you are very high, your doctor will PROBABLY put you on a diet. Expect to have a glucose tolerance test in your near future.

Diabetes occurs when the glucose in your blood is not taken in by your body cells. This can be caused by the pancreas not producing any insulin (Type I diabetes) or in Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or the body cells become resistant to insulin or a combination of both of these things.

Glucose is a large molecule that cannot pass through the cell wall to get into the cell. Insulin, binds with the cell wall and causes the pores in the cell wall to open wider to allow the glucose into the cell. The cell needs glucose for energy to survive.

When Type I or Type 2 diabetes exists, the glucose cannot enter the cells and floats around in the bloodstream causing high blood glucose levels (BGL's).

People with diabetes test their blood several times per day to monitor their BGL. It tells them what their BGL is at that precise moment. However it is importsnt to know what long term control is like. An HbA1c test gives a 3 month picture of blood glucose control or lack of control.

Many Type 2 diabetics can be controlled with diet and exercise. Sometimes they need tablets. Rarely they need insulin injections.

Try not to worry. Diabetes can be controlled and you would be surprised how easy it is once you learn what to eat etc. There is also a lot of support out there from your doctor, Diabetes Australia and dieticians.

I think that's a kinda cold and crappy way to deliver test results. Think of it this way - if it were an emergency, they'd have called and had you come in right away.

Congratulations to you for requesting the blood glucose test. You are way ahead of the game because you are knowledgeable enough to realize your risk.

There are two possiblities - your A1c test is abnormal because of a lab mistake - maybe it's way high, or maybe it's way low. Either way, your doc will do additional tests to double check the results.

If your tests show you are diabetic, it's not the end of the world, but the beginning of a more healthy lifestyle for you.
Ask your doc to prescribe a diabetes education class for you.

Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals with whole grains at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.
