Can you have diabetes and not know it?!

Question: Three years ago, I passed out at work. I was experiencing high levels of stress at the time. I was doing a show on live t.v. that i wasn't prepared for. And I had not eaten anything all day. It was 1:00 when I passed out and I had been working since 8:00 without a break.
Well, they checked my blood sugar on the way to the hospital and it had bottomed out. They gave me an IV and they gave me a sandwich at the hospital and some juice. My bloodsugar shot way up. They said it was unusual to see such dramatic differences. He told me to go get tested for diabetes. I never did and have no other symptoms. Could I still have it after three years of no problems? Is diabetes like that? What other symptoms could I have? I eat alot of sugar.

Actually diabetes has no clear symptoms. There can be lots of people that has diabetes, but still don't have any symptoms. Indeed, it's very difficult to recognize its symptoms and be cured at time.

Coming now to your case. First of all, we don't know your age. Anyway, I can give you an answer without it.

So, if you are less than 40 years old, you supposed to have type 1 diabetes. Since you haven't had any problems until now, it's improbable to have it.

But, instead if you have more than 40 years old, it is supposed that you maybe may have type 2 diabetes. As you have told, you only had this episode of up and down blood sugar levels. You cannot exclude the possibility to maybe you'll have diabetes in future.

To recognize diabetes symptoms, first of all, you should classify your self as in risk of developing it. To do so you should know if you're at risk or not. The risk factors to develop type 2 diabetes include; being more than 40-45 years old, obese, having family history with diabetes, if you have had a baby with more than 4 kg weight..........

Coming to the signs and symptoms of diabetes, they include [I'm mentioning some of them]; increased thirst and urine frequency, skin problems, infection problems...........................

Remember; first you must know if you are at risk
then you should 'search for ' the symptoms
and only than you should cure; first line of cure is 'naturally'
the second line comes with drugs according to doctor's prescription.

yes you could be and its not gotten that bad yet. but you are messing up not finding out and starting to take care of it maybe with diet you wouldn't have to have meds or shot. its worth it to start and not hae this disease and you can either forlong the disease or sometimes not have it ever. taken care of right.

if you eat a lot of sugar and haven't had any more symptoms you probably don't. but i would still get tested. better be safe the sorry.

It's possible to have diabetes and not know it, some of the signs are so vague.

I think you might have passed out from a mixture of stress and not eating, not lack of sugar.

It absolutely possible to have diabetes or be borderline diabetic and not know it. I would get it checked out.

Most people dont know they have it, they either suspect it and then get tested but its not always clear. But if you eat a lot of sugar now then I would think you would not have diabetes because people with diabetes that eat a lot of sugar get really sick and can actually go into a sugar coma, like where there body is so off-balanced and not right they can pass out, have a seizure, and when its really low they get whacko like blurred vision, and talk way out of it, almost like they are stoned, or a completely different person. Just go get tested, its not that hard.

i would get it tested...its one of those things that you should just be sure of ya know?

eating sugar does not make you get sugar.
It is the way your body responds to sugar in your system.
You can have diabetes and not know it.
If someone in your family has diabetes I would get tested for sure.
Considering what happened to you - it does not hurt to get tested. Peace of mind.

According to your last sentence, unless you have been having problems since your last incidence then I guess your fine. Dont be eating a lot of sugar though thats not healthy for you and can lead to diabetes. Getting tested is always better than risking it because knowing is always better than not knowing. I suggest you go get tested.

The vast majority of diabetics don't know they are.
You should go to Dr. and get a Glucose Tolerance Test; then you'll know where you are.
The damage to body occurs WAY before symptoms appear; so quite important to even know if you've have a tendency to be one.

Do you pee a lot? Are you thirsty a lot? Are your gums retracting?
Look, just see a doctor if you're concerned. There's no way for anyone to *really* tell until you get tested. My dad had undiagnosed diabetes for three years and it almost killed him. He lost 70 pounds and nearly fell into a coma.
Untreated diabetes can be vicious. If you're concerned, SEE A DOCTOR. The test is EXTREMELY simple. You basically drink something sugary and they test your urine for abnormally high amounts of glucose. That's it.

Yes. You can have diabetes and not know it. The doctor in the E.R. told you to get tested for diabetes. So talk to your doctor about it. He can help you figure out whether it makes sense to take the next step. Which might be a glucose tolerance test.

In the early stages, people tend to have a sweet tooth (which it sounds like you do). They may have more thirst than average, or a tendency to get dehydrated easily. But it is common for people to have mild diabetes for years without having any symptoms that they recognize.

Yes, I have diabetes but I didn't know until I had gone for a physical. Please, go have it checked out. Does anyone else in your family have diabetes? I was told that I had it when I was 43. This is a disease that doesn't discriminate. Once you are a diabetic - you will always be a diabetic. There is a lot to learn about living with diabetes. I do wish you the best.

yes you can. if blood sugar hi just as bad if low. you also should have eyes checked reg. this will also let you know what its doing to your eyes.
wife diabetic 30 yrs. been there. it can cause lots of other problems also. check it on google'

You could be borderline diabetic. You could be hypoglycemic. To where if you don't have enough surgar in your system you bottom out. This is very dangerous. You could go into a coma. This is worse than having a sugar level that is too high. If you have a friend that is diabetic you could always have them test you blood sugar to see what it is. A normal blood sugar level is from 80 to 124. If it is lower than 80 you need some sugar. If it is higher than 124 you need to see a doctor and have them run some tests and see where to go from there. But being that you had an episode before you should definately get checked. There are other signs of diabetes also. Such as having to urinate more than normal, losing or gaining a large amount of weight in a very short period of time, getting light headed or weak when you haven't had anything to eat or enough to eat. Read up on the disease, I am sure there are more symptoms. And make sure to see a doctor even if you haven't had any symptoms lately.

Apparently so. I didn't know until a routine blood test during a physical showed high blood glucose.

Stop worrying... (it will just raise your blood glucose). Chances are pretty good that you have a mild (pre diabetes) case and a decent diet and exercise plan will fix you right up. Just go get a GTT (glucose tolerance test). It's easy and should be covered by your medical plan. If not, get a glucose monitor and learn how to watch your blood glucose... it's not hard. If you test positive, treating it is a simple matter of education. If you test negative, it wouldn't hurt to get yourself in tip top condition anyway. If there's any indication of it being in your family, it's good insurance to take care of yourself.
