What are the symptoms of autism?

One of the best resources on the web is through autismspeaks.org, I won't repeat what they list - for the red flags go to:

also visit, as their site recommends:
http://www.firstsigns.org/

There are signs and symptoms that may be recognizable as early as 12 months.

The only word of caution I would advise is that there are genetic syndromes, such as Fragile X and Angelman for males and females, and Rett Syndrome for females, in which children may display many of the same characteristics.

At two years old, have you noticed developmental delays that may lead you to believe the child might be on the autism spectrum? Is it possible for a 2 year old to have autism? The answer would be yes. A child may from birth demonstrate signs, or a child may develop typically and then regress (they have acquired skills but then begin to lose them.)

Will it go away as they get older? Realistically, no it just doesn't disappear, but through interventions and depending on the child (this is a spectrum disorder) they may learn to adapt (very simply put).

Signs of autism may appear during infancy and the disorder is usually diagnosed by the age of 3. Sometimes the child's development appears normal until about 2 years old and then regresses rapidly. Symptoms of autism occur in various combinations, from mild to severe.
