It is possible. First, you have to understand that there are many different types of arthritis, not all are permanent. The most common that people think of is osteoarthitis-this is the kind that older people get as part of the aging process where the cartilege in the joint just gets worn down through excessive use. There are other types such as rheumatic arthritis and psoriatic arthritis which fit into a category of autoimmune mediated arthritis. Basically what happens is that body gets confused when mounting an immune response, possibly to a virus, and starts attacking itself. While they are not "curable" most of those illnesses are manageable with medication and they are not typically life threatening.

There are arthritises there are caused indirectly by viral infection. Its sort of like the ones I talked about, the autoimmune kind, above. The body starts attacking the virus or bacteria and, without getting into the weeds about why this happens, things just sort of get out of control. Its a complicated process involving antibodies and the joint capsule. The most common kind of arthritis, in a young person, in this category is a reactive arthritis and generally speaking, these tend to slowly improve over a matter of weeks and then go away. It is not infectious though the virus that caused it might be. But just because your girlfriend's body reacted to that virus in that way does not mean that anyone else's would so I wouldn't worry. Without knowing what kind of arthritis your girlfriend has its impossible to tell you definitively what the treatment or prognosis would be. I would talk to her directly and see what the doc has told her about the type of arthritis, how they are going to treat it and when she should expect to feel better.

A virus is contagious. Likely she got the aches of the virus that will go away after a while.
