Answers: I've just started accutane today and I was wondering if anyone else is or has used it, good stories bad stories whatever

I took Accutane years ago, and it was a miracle drug for me; I actually had to take it more than once. I was someone who had cystic acne that affected not only my face but also my chest and back. It isn't a "fun" medication to be on -- it has definite side effects (common ones are headache, very dry skin, itching, peeling skin initially ... some thinning of the hair can occur but nearly always reverses once the medicine is discontinued) -- and thus it is typically only prescribed for patients whose acne is truly *severe* and has not responded to other medications. I did not experience any side effects beyond those typically experienced: very dry skin, chapped lips, headache, peeling skin, and itching.

Some patients who did not need the medication are given it to them anyway because they requested it, when they actually only had mild-to-moderate acne. These are the patients who frequently express regret over haven taken medication and who have the most complaints about their experiences with it.

So, your satisfaction will likely depend on how bad your acne really is: if you have severe, cystic, nodular acne that leads to scarring and is or has *significantly* affected your quality of life, then Accutane is probably the correct choice for you. On the other hand, if you only have mild or moderate acne that does not cause scars or is only limited to your face, then Accutane may not be the best choice for you, and you may find its side effects to be unacceptable for the results. For those with truly severe acne, it is the only drug of its kind that provides its level of effective treatment.

Work with your dermatologist to determine how long you want to be on the drug -- the usual minimum is about two/three months, depending on the severity of your acne -- and report any intolerable side effects immediately.

Tell the doctor who gave it to you to shove it. That crap rots your teeth. You'll have no acne, but at the cost of your teeth.

I used it for an extended period when I was younger. While it worked wonders WHILE I WAS TAKING IT, I also experienced some bad side effects, namely loss of hair and skin discoloration while I was taking it. So my advice: take it if you must, but in strict moderation and careful of its side effects. Actually, for acne, I would suggest you use ProActive, far better and far safer.

I regret having used it and also for signing a waiver not to sue the company. My biggest side effect was that it gave me SEVERE depression and suicidal thoughts that have lingered on over the years. It didn't cure the acne for me either but I know it has for others. I just think it's too harsh and old school and not good overall. Now that DP says that, I did get a lot of cavities but had no idea to relate it to that medication....interesting. It also destroyed my cuticles permanently and I no longer grow any but I was warned that was a possible side effect.

I've used accutane for six months and I got fantastic results. . .until I got off it, I started breaking out after I used it mostly because my skin is just so damn oily

I took it twice. Each course for 5 months. It was a miracle drug for me. I did have some side effects, mostly very chapped lips but for me it was worth it.

I used accutane a little more than a year ago it really helped my skin. I took it for six months, In the first couple of months you dont see much improvements, or really anything at all. However, by the third month you really see its effects, you skin gets real dry and your lips start to crack, I would advise you to get some lotion and chapstick(your gonna really need this).
Also, remember to drink lots of water cause you will need it. I would also advise that you stop eating some fatty foods for a while, like fast food stuff, jsut cause this medicine really rasies your cholesterol, so its good to be safe.
I have also heard stories of people to begin feeling depressed and all during the medication process, however I felt none of that so, Im not sure what they are taking about, guess its just different from person to person.
Overall, Im happy with the medication cause it did help, however I still get a pimple once in a while on the face but nothing as bad as it used to be, plus the acne on the back is gone, just a few scars left. Well good luck on your acne removal process, hopefully it'll be well worth it.
