What's needed is a medical data tracking system so that your specialists can pull up your information and see what medications other physicians have prescribed for you. I think this is already being implemented in some hospitals.

I suspect, if it were suggested that this be implemented for private practice doctors, someone would start an uproar about patient privacy and that this is too much sensitive information to be kept on a computer network. You just watch.

As it is, the system relies on patient honesty and accuracy of self-reporting. But not only do some patients lie; a lot of times, they don't know what they're taking or even what it's for. They might not even remember everything they're taking, if they've been prescribed a lot of medications.

If they're in the emergency room, you can _bet_ they won't remember everything they're taking or even their complete medical history. Pain dulls the mind to everything but itself.

i agree. thats what people do with meth.they just go to different pharmacists.you are right the government should

Doctors know exactly the addictive powers of narcotic pain medications. They have no way of preventing someone from going from doctor to doctor. In addition, there is no national computer system that ties all pharmacies together so that anyone knows a person just got a narcotic prescription from another location/physician. One of the reasons physicians continue to prescribe pain medications for any little complaint is that they now have to practice preventive medicine (to prevent lawsuits) because if you DON'T give someone medication to treat their presenting symptoms, then they turn around and sue you. It is a vicious cycle and physicians do not like what they are made to do just to prevent having to end up in court.

Well, ask someone in chronic pain their opinion and they'll let you know that the government needs to EASE restrictive access to pain controlling medications. The stuff isn't as easy to get as you think.

I have been two steps away from a loaded gun pointed at my own head because I have a pain condition and couldn't get adequate treatment or pain medication.

I say ease the restrictions so those in pain can lead a normal life and if someone OD's on the drugs, call it natural selection. They shouldn't be abusing them anyway and it's their fault that people like me will never fully enjoy life because pain interferes on a daily basis.

It really upsets me to see anyone say that pain meds are out of control. If they really were, people like me wouldn't have to suffer all because a handful of morons like getting high on the stuff.

I say put it OTC. Then let the herd thin itself.

Sorry if that sounds mean but YOU live in chronic pain every single day and then tell me how you feel when doctors look at you and tell you they can't do anything because they will lose their license if they prescribe "too much" medication. Be in a position where that medication makes the difference in you being able to wipe your own a** or bend over and pick something up out of the floor.

Wait, here's one better than that...YOU give up your kids to live with their idiot father (who isn't that great of a parent but if you have no choice) all because you can't care for them adequately...all because a bunch of dope fiends risk ODing and THEY get the compassion and you get nothing but a stigma attached to you and a condition that isn't going to get any better.

Some days I would trade my car in for ONE single vicoden, lortab or shot of nubain. I'm not an addict OR abuser. I'm just in pain.

The government has already done something about this. It is not legal, and not possible, to do what you describe at any legitimate pharmacy with any scheduled drug.

You may be able to get the extra prescription, but you won't be able to fill it. Unless you are filling it out of the trunk of some guy's car illegally. In which case what do you need the prescriptions filled for?

The government knows exactly how many pills you have been prescribed, how many have been filled, and when. And they will not let you have more until an appropriate amount of time has passed. It's all very big brother.

I think the parents of kids should do a better job of raising their kids so they don't go out abusing medical prescriptions !
