Why do labs not test for TH1 and TH2 (thyroid) if this pertains to Type 1 diabet!

Question: Normally only TH3 and TH4 and TSH gets tested and so many Type 1 people with diabetes have underactive thyroid problems.

Answers: Normally only TH3 and TH4 and TSH gets tested and so many Type 1 people with diabetes have underactive thyroid problems.

Type 1 diabetes and thyroid problems are both auto-immune disorders. Type 1 diabetics develop hypothyroid problems at a higher rate than the general population. They think it is a problem with the immune system working overtime. There are other auto-immune disorders that happen more frequently in type 1 diabetics as well.

i have never come across a relationship between type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. i wonder what u are basing this on?

the thyroid is a gland that has nothing to do with diabetes, and there wouls be no indication to test all type 1's for underactive thyroid.

My 13 year old daughter is diabetic and I have heard the doc's talk about the underactive thyroid. In fact, they were going to test her but she started losing weight when she went on the pump (she was on huge amounts of insulin and it still wasn't keeping things in control) perhaps they test when it may be required rather than just testing everyone? Obviously there are signs of an underactive thyroid, so perhaps they test when these are in evidence. As you would know, insulin is a hormone and can make you put on weight so if you are on high doses that could explain, plus, the more insulin you have the less effective it can be too.

I haven't heard of a connection between thyroid problems and diabetes. That being said, my thyroid levels were hovering just above or below the underactive level for most of the time that I was glucose intolerant. Since I developed frank diabetes they have normalised.

my daughter is 10,she has had type 1 diabetes since she was 1.when she turned 4 the hopital started testing her for thyroid problems.when she turned 8 she started loosing weight, was tired all the time and it turned out she had an underactive thyroid which she manages well with by taking 125microgram tablets every day and attends the hosp every 4 weeks 2 have her blood tested which she hates.....

It's the opposite connection....Many with hypothyroidism suffer from insulin resistance or diabetes because of the slowdown in metabolism and difficulty processing carbs.

Testing of TSH, Free T4, and Free T3 are the best 3 thyroid tests and should always be done first thing in the morning.
