When you are sleeping and get a low blood sugar, are you most likely to wake up !

Question: I don't like to go to bed knowing I could go low.

Answers: I don't like to go to bed knowing I could go low.

Don't worry: it'll wake you up.
That is what I was most afraid of when I started having diabetes: I feared I'd go low during the night.
But I can assure you that you do wake up if blood sugar level go low. Just keep some sugar near where you sleep

I was reading the other replies: just wanted to tell you that you don't necessarily have nightmares XD Well..I've never had :)

You will wake-up, you will be able to feel it.

I wake up. I can't go back to sleep until I eat something.

well if ur really low you could pass out but i have diabetes type 1 and ive never passed out, ive always woke up and felt it
hope this helps

If you are a type 2 diabetic , non insulin dependant I was told that low readings were self correcting , that given a few hours your sugars would go up again as the body converted some fats for energy.

Your Doctor or Nurse trainer would be best to explain what would happen in your specific situation .

Low sugars are more potentially harmful to insulin users .

Tough one to call, my boyfriend is a very fragile and severe diabetic. He will sleep through it. I have to keep making sure his blood glucose levels are okay in the middle of the night. He has gone down to 20 before and I have had to get him up and force him to drink a soda to get his blood sugar up. Now that's not to say that would happen to you. Every person is different with diabetes. He wears an insulin pump constantly because his body doesn't create insulin. If you worry about them going low in your sleep, drink a soda or eat a candy bar before going to bed at night. Do something to raise your blood glucose level slightly before you go to bed at night. Make sure you keep a good check on it though!!!

i wake up and 4 sum reason i do have nightmares
not all the time, but when i just start feeling bad and i just cant get 2 sleep I KNOWm my bl sugar is LOW

You are most likely to sleep right through it.

I wake up when I have them and have nightmares sometimes (I think this is my body's way of telling me the blood sugar is low; also when I can't sleep I check my blood sugar to be sure it isn't low), which amazes my doctors since I have had diabetes for 43 years. When a person has had diabetes for a long time, they tend not to be able to tell that their blood sugar is low, or going low, so they may not wake up when it goes low at night. This happened with my mom many times, and she ended up in the hospital many times because of it. The lows is the reason why the doctors will tell you to check your blood sugar before bed, make sure it is about 120 (mine has to be about there anyway), and eat a snack with carbs and protein (peanut butter sandwich is great since peanut butter lasts in the system a long time). Taking these steps should help to prevent lows. But, if you have a low, then you need to take care of it right away. I keep Pepsi in my bedroom (it is on the top floor of a 3 story house and I don't want to fall down the stairs trying to get to food or sugar).

If you are a diabetic and have low sugar because you took too much insulin for the amount of food that you ate, your blood sugars could go so low that you could slip into a diabetic coma and die.

I would say you are most likely to wake up as I have many times and only once did I not. Overnight lows are the scariest.

My brother usually wakes up. But he has plenty of time to go downstairs and get a glass of juice. If you are concerned, keep sugar close by, so if it does happen, you can be ready.

My body wakes me up. I know immediately what the problem is. Eat a snack before going to bed. Something like graham crackers with a little peanut butter. That's what my nutritionist had me do and now I don't have the problem anymore. Also, check with your doctor to see if your meds need adjusted.

Keep a small can of orange juice or something similar near the bed so you just roll over to take of your condition. orange juice is absorbed quickly.

Best Wishes
