What are the chances I'll have to postpone this surgery?!

Question: I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday (in 2 days) - today I have a very sore throat and a fever.

Answers: I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday (in 2 days) - today I have a very sore throat and a fever.

call your surgeon's office and talk with the nurse. she will let you know what you should take and weather you will have surgery. hope you get to feeling better soon

Usually if you have fever within 24 hours of your scheduled surgery, your surgery will be postponed. Sore thoarts don't usually cause cancellations. Take Tynelol (if not otherwise contradicted) and a timid (room temp.) bath to help reduce your fever and make sure you tell you surgeon about you fever. Be sure to keep an eye on your temp, your Dr. will want to know what the temp was exactly.

Any fever will cancel your surgery. They want you in optimal condition before they do any invasive procedure - it lessens your chances of getting an infection or other complications. Treat your fever with tylenol or ibuprofen on a regular basis until Monday night and then decide how you are feeling and talk with your doctor about this on Monday.

Don't take anything to reduce the fever since your doctor needs a true evaluation of your health and something like Tylenol will produce something more like a lie.

If you still have a fever 24 hours before the scheduled time, call and let them know and they will cancel you themselves. Do NOT cancel it on your own as that will start a nightmare of paperwork with your insurance.

If you already have an infection, surgery is the last thing you need.
