Question about antibiotics??!


Question: my son who is 20 months old just started taking antibotics for a bacterial eye infection and ear infection. The bottle says take once a day for ten days. Do I need to give it to him at the same time everyday or does it matter? It's called Cefdinir its generic for Omnicef. There is no pharmisist on call today.

Antibiotics that are ordered once every 24 hours should be given at about the same time of the day everyday. The most important instruction is to give ALL of the antiobiotics for the entire 10 days and don't stop unless your son develops any type of allergic reaction such as rash or trouble breathing. The biggest mistake parents make is stopping the antibiotic when their child is feeling better. If you do not completely kill off the bacteria then you are just allowing it to harbor in your child's body and get stronger for the next infection. Sounds like you are a good parent to take the time to obtain clarification on this issue.

Follow the directions on the bottle. The purpose of giving timed doses is to assure that there is a proper drug load during the course of treatment. Some directions say 4 times per day. They mean morning, noon and evening and before you go to bed. Others say every 8 hours. They mean every 8 hours through the 24 hour period. Some drugs require more precision than others
