Will I get him sick?!

Question: Im a cocktail waitress at a bar. And one of the bar tenders has been sick ALL week. Coughing ALL over the place, not even covering her mouth at times. She said that she went to the doctor and she has strep throat.

Well suprise Im sick. I woke up this morning with a sore throat and I've been coughing myself all day. Like I dont think I have strep, Ive never had it. My throat hurts but it doesnt kill me.

The big question is am I contagious? Because I may have gotten sick from the bar tender or who knows it could of been a sick customer.

My boyfriend is in the hospital, hes been there for a month with a shattered pelvis and a really bad infection. and i dont want to see him if i have a chance of getting him sick. so should i play it safe and not see him or am I not contagious since i have symptoms?

In a nutshell....avoid seeing the boyfriend for several days, or until your symptoms subside.

The majority of what you have described is precisely what I've been seeing in my practice for the past couple of months. Sometimes we term it as "The Office Syndrome," where everyone in the office eventually gets the same stuff (or in this case...the bar). Often it's a cough and sore throat, usually accompanied by body aches, etc. If your temperature is 100.5 or less, then it is likely viral. Strep throat is most often seen with temps of 102.5 or greater, and a SEVERE pain in the throat (likened to swallowing a ball of crushed glass).

Symptom relieve measures are about the only thing you can do. The virus will typically work out of the body in 5-10 days, but the cough may last for weeks (although you feel normal). Alternating Advil and Tylenol every 4 hours or so seems to help. Using antibiotics is useless because this is a VIRAL infection. Despite that people may have a "productive" cough, this does NOT denote infection that needs antibiotics. 90% of bronchitis is viral anyhow, and typically resolves in 7-10 days on its own. A hard sell to some patients though. Usually Mucinex does a fine job in loosening up the phlegm.

I can only imagine how much it would hurt for your boyfriend to get a cough with a pelvic fracture -- ouch!

If you are hard-pressed to see him, I'm sure you could ask the nurse for a disposable mask to wear. They should be readily available, and not an issue. I think they would certainly appreciate you asking for one as well! Likewise, wash your hands BEFORE and AFTER seeing your boyfriend.

Best of luck! Hope this helps!

Do NOT go anywhere near hospital until you are fully recovered. Whether it's strep throat or a cold, you should not inflict it on people who are already sick.

go to the doctor cuz if you have strep then you need rest otherwise it can effect your heart and you can die!!!!

You are contagious, but strep throat isn't a very serious illness.
If you visit someone in the hospital with a sickness, most of the time you are supposed to wear a mask if it is contagious, restricting transmission of illness, protecting you from getting your boyfriend sick and vice versa.
