Is there a connection between psoriasis and hairdye?!
Question: My daughter suffers from psoriasis [mostly on her legs & arms]. However she does color her hair often, and it worries me that there maybe a link, as lately she has noticed her scalp, back and front having new outbreaks. Coincidence?

I'm sure she's already seeing a doctor about her psoriasis and using creams that's prescribed so I won't go through the in's and out's of home remedies or creams to try. To answer your question, the only connection between hair dye and psoriasis is the drying of the skin that comes in contact with the chemical which aggravates the condition she already has. I only dye my hair once every 2-3 months and before hand I always use a very very good conditioner, rinse mildly so there's a skim of it on my scalp, and I NEVER EVER rub the dye onto my scalp. You have to be very careful when coming to get to the roots that you don't touch the scalp or it might scrape it and make the psoriasis worse or start at the scrape. They have really good root combs that you can have her use. Just tell her not to scrub it into the scalp. Follow it up with good moisturizing conditioners and have her use head and shoulders a couple of times a week to make sure it treats her scalp as well without stripping the color she's dyed her hair.
As far as the rest of her body, sometimes we have breakouts for no reason or due to stress. Sometimes even what we're eating. If she's going through a lot of stress it might explain the sudden outbreak. Usually sudden outbreaks will go away once the situation is changed or through mild treatment. If she's changed medications for her psoriasis right before this happened PLEASE tell her to tell the doctor since that happened once to me and it was an adverse reaction to the new cream.

Nc connection. Psoriasis comes from alteration in internal immunity where the skin then becomes thick, overgrown and flaky. External factors such as hair dye wouldn 't cause this as such. However insofar as it may be a generic irritant to your daughter's skin it may not be helping matters much in regard to her scalp if there are psoriatic plaques there to begin with.
I have psoriasis on my scalp and always have. I used to dye my hair a lot but have stopped in the last 4 years. The only thing that would happen is the dry patches would become dyed too and that was a little weird.
It did not flair up because of the dye, and shouldn't because it's completely unrelated.
Here are some interesting things that have helped me out with my psoriasis:
1. Strangely... Victoria's Secret Love Spell lotion. Not the creme, but the regular stuff. I don't know what it is, but it helps keep the skin from becoming red and inflamed. I use it on and off with my regular steroid cream that my doctor prescribed. I usually use this on my ears because the cream is too strong and not recommended for non-trunk use.
2. Steroid cream. It works wonders but I have noticed that it has thinned my skin out. Maybe it is just an illusion, but my skin feels weaker on my elbows after I use the stuff for more than 4 days in a row. But it works wonders. I use Clobex.
3. My mom made this salt/oil concoction that works very well to get rid of the excess dry skin that builds up and itches. It is fine sea salt and a mixture of essential oils and baby products (lotion, oil, cream). It smells fantastic and really helps sloff off the grossness.
4. For my head I use Clobex shampoo. It's a beautiful thing and if I use it regularly (3 days in a row, 2 days without), I have no build up, no dandruff, and it makes my scalp healthy.
I only have it in small patches on my elbows, my knee, my scalp, my ears, and slowly but surely... everywhere else.
It's really hard to keep under control and I'm sorry that your daughter has it.
The origin of psoriasis is not known and no connection between psor. and hair dye is established.
I may recommend (from my own dealings with plaque psor) the herbal cream and spray from champori.com It works faster and better than anything else I tried.
