My dad is getting whipple surgery? please answer?!

Question: hes 50 and hes a alcholic (sp?)
hes been drinking for like 30 years now
and he might have cancer in the pancreas
well thats what my mom says anyway
but im pretty sure he does, why else would he be having this surgey?
my mom wont tell me anything about it, other than its gonna be a long and painful surgey and hes gonna stay in the hospital for over a month
so tell me what are they gonna do, and is he going to be okay in the end? what are the chances? im fifteen years old

Your dad is having a surgical re route around the drainage route from his pancreas into his intestine. This usually is performed because of a malignancy in the pancreas. The surgery is long and tedious. It requires a surgeon who has a lot of experience with the pancreas and ducts The surgical procedure itself takes quite a bit of time and is tedious.
I doubt he will stay in the hospital for a month, probably more like a week to 10 days. The surgery is not a cure, but it will buy your dad some time until either the chemotherapy for his cancer works or they find another treatment.
Just remember alcoholism is a disease and your dad has been sick for a long time.
The surgery is done to buy some time. Your dad needs a miracle. Your mom needs your family to stick together and love one another the best you can.

Whipple procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy). This is the most common procedure for treating pancreatic cancer, including resectable cancers of the ampulla of Vater. In general, the Whipple procedure involves removing the wide end (head) of your pancreas. To do that, your surgeon must also remove your duodenum, gallbladder and the end of the common bile duct. Sometimes part of your stomach is removed as well. The end of your bile duct and remaining part of your pancreas are then connected to your small intestine so that bile and pancreatic enzymes continue to reach the small intestine. The procedure has risks, including infection and bleeding.

cancer of the pancreas is just one of the reason why whipple procedure is done. it is a major operation that can last for 4-6hrs. there are a lot of complications in this operation.most of it are secondary to the health status of the patient prior to surgery. since cancer of the pancreas is usually detected in their later stages. it is because during its early stages it doesn't show much signs or symptoms. usually they just complain of bloatedness or vague epigastric pain. as for the the outcome of the operation... i'd ask your permission first if its okay for you that i'll be posting sensitive matters that everyone could read?
