Friend in hospital please help....?!

Question: our good friend was admitted into MICU yesterday after going to ER via ambulance from home. He had a core temp of 32celcius and he has hypothermia, kidney failure, he is diabetic, his sugar level was high, he is on a vent in MICU they are keeping him sedated. his heart stopped in ER but they recusitated him and now they say he stable after getting two rounds of dialysis. When i asked the RN if his condition was any better she said no. We were told in Er he had only 15% chance of survival. he is 59 years old. Why would he not be getting better if he is stable now?
Do you think our friend can pull through this? please be honest.
thanks

Oh dear. Your friend will be in my thoughts.

That he is stable is good: It means he's not sliding down any more. I don't really know if he will pull out or not, but right now you have to be sure not to lose it: People who seem unconscious are actually aware of more than they seem to be (experience talking here).

I'm not saying give up by any means: People have beaten longer odds than that. I'll be cheering for you!

Wow! You have asked a difficult question, for sure. Of course, no one can truly tell you if your friend is going to be all right, what level of recovery he will make, nor if he will recover. However, I can address the question of 'stable' vs 'no better'...

When a patient is in Stable Condition, it only means that their vital signs are within normal limits. Vital signs are usually temperature, blood pressure, heart rate. This does not mean that your friend is not in Serious condition. Serious condition means that the patient is acutely ill and his prognosis is unpredictable.

I am sorry for your friend. Try to keep a positive attitude. He is still alive and that is a lot to hold on to. He does have many very serious problems right now and time is the only thing that will tell you whether or not he might pull through. The first 48 hours are a critical stage. His chances will improve if he can remain stable and his various conditions do not deteriorate. It sounds like he is in a good hospital that is doing all they can to help him. Keep the faith.
