High blood pressure.....140 over 104?!

Question: My fiance has been feeling really sluggish lately and some other symptoms. People have told him to have his blood pressure and sugar checked for diabetes. It kind of scared us so we made an appt for the doc next week. In the meantime we went to wal-mart and check it on the machines and it read high 140 over 104. I don't know anything about this kind of stuff but according to the screen this was a high reading. Can anyone provide any information about this stuff. What can be done, what causes it, what are the symptoms of diabetes...we already know the blood pressure is high. How dangerous, etc. I know the doc will tell us all this but in the mean time we would like info. Thank you.

have the doc's office do his blood pressure, a lot of times the supermarket or wal mart machines are calibrated and give false readings. Don't make any conclusions until you have a real blood pressure reading taken.

the 2 nd number is th eone doctors watch in your case the 104 number
any 2nd number over 100 is dangerous
he needs to get it checked asap
high blood pressure can lead to heart attack stroke and death

140/104 is high. Your fiance should go see his medical doctor who will probably refer him to a cardiologist. Depending on how old he is and what the underlying factor is for the high blood presssure, will determine what the treatment will be. Why don't you research high blood pressure on the internet. The subject is too broad based to give a short answer.....

It's all dangerous. His blood pressure reading is high and can be managed by eating properly, dieting and maybe medication. He needs blood testing. That will tell him if he is a diabetic or close to being one. If he can avoid that, he will have a longer and healthier life.
This is someone you love and it's up to you to convince him about the seriousness of poor health.

Yes, that is a high reading. Not extreme, but well within the high category.

High BP is one of silent killers of western culture, but is actually quite treatable with a lot of inexpensive medications that have few side effects.

At that reading, blood vessels are somewhat strained, which can lead to accelerated wear and tear on the vascular system. Over a period of years, this can lead to heart and kidney disease, as well as stroke.

Diabetes can also be serious, but is treatable and the conditions often occur together.

See your doctor, get medications, stay on those medications and closely, closely monitor his readings. Also, regular exercise and dietary changes can make a tremendous difference. I am always surprised at how many people ignore easily treated, but serious diseases like these, and then suffer the consequences of shorter, more sickly lifespans.

Hunny, this is dangerous, he can actually die for high blood pressure, he needs to eat more veggies avoid stress, until he sees the doctor, they can prescribe meds for him, he will likey be on it for the rest of his life. The bottom number is bad, the top is good, it should be in the 140 over 78, rage, less stress, for the time being, less red meats. Good Luck
