This is harmful to your health. You body repairs itself during sleep and it is being denied this opportunity so soon, your body is going to crash and burn if you don't get this problem fixed. There are a lot of wonderful sleep aids on the market - you can start with over the counter ones (tylenol PM or any other brand) to get yourself back into a regular sleep pattern. If over the counter meds do not help, the new prescription sleep meds have almost no hangover in the morning and can provide you with 6 - 8 hours of continuous sleep. Your body needs retrained so that you can get back into a normal sleep pattern and yes, this is insomnia. If you don't want sleep meds, how do you think you are going to turn this pattern around? Melatonin and valerian can help but usually the effects do not last after a couple of weeks and then you need to get something else. A good exercise program where you are exercising for at least 30 minutes per day will fatigue your body and maybe allow you to sleep. Do not exercise in the evenings. There are also some new anti-depressants which have almost no side effects which can shut off the thoughts in your mind so that your mind has a chance to shut down at night also. You have lots of options available to you, hopefully you have already tried some of them.

yes, i belive this is insomnia and yes it is bad for your health, mentally and physically. you may find that you're more irritable than normal and that is why. if you don't want sleep meds, because I believe that 9 times out of 10 you're getting them, maybe you should try exercise. wear your body down so that you would have to go to sleep and stay asleep. have you changed your eating patterns? changes at work? these can cause a change in your sleeping patterns. remember, your body needs sleep like a car needs gas, so whatever the case, it can be bad for your health to go without sleep.

***HOME REMEDY ALERT***

I know you didn't want a home remedy, but I can't help myself :) Try warm milk and relaxing music such as jazz or cut your tv to the book channel or something that'll bore you to sleep. Works when I can't get to sleep :)

If you regularly have trouble sleeping, and you do not have a Physical Sleeping Disorder, you are probably suffering from the sleeping disorder of insomnia. More than 2 million people in Australia, and more than 30 million people in the USA, regularly have trouble sleeping. If you suffer from the sleeping disorder of insomnia, it is likely that you often feel tired during the day. You may also have difficulty concentrating, you may become irritable, and personal relationships may suffer. In general, it is very difficult to enjoy your life when you are not getting as much deep restorative sleep as you need. Some of the main types of insomnia are as follows.
Some people sleep quite well for months or years at a time, but
then have periods of a few days, weeks or months of poor sleep.
These Bouts of Insomnia, as they are called, can be very frustrating

recurs again.
