Chrones disease?!

Question: My gf has chrone disease and has treatment every 8 weeks. Right after she gets her treatment she is a little different and probably in a lot of pain. She is outgoing and such and then after she gets her treatment she is very quiet and distant. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable?

hi steve, I am a female Crohn's survivor. Is the treatment you are talking about called Remicade?? It's not suppose to be painful but put the person in remission quickly. I had it when it first came out and felt great the next day. It kept me in remission for 1 1/2 yrs. Until is stopped working 2 yrs. later. Then my GI turned a newer treatment that just came out.

Remicade is not a chemo drug but a biologic that is used to turn off the cells that cause inflammation in the gut. If at any time she has a reaction, the GI will stop it and try something else such as Humira shots, Entocort, 6MP, or Imuran.

I am currently on Humira, Entocort, and for pain management--Percocet, for stomach spasms-- bentyl, and back spasms (a CD side effect) muscle relaxer.

She should be able to get something from her GI or primary care MD for pain management. Also, try a heating pad 15 minutes on the tummy, 20 minutes off for 1 hr or a Thermacare heat wrap for the back. Move the heat discs to the front and she can sleep with it on for 8 hrs.

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America has a website that has updated information on the latest treatments, approved drugs, diet, women's issues, surgery, coping skills, as well as locating a local support group (I highly suggest taking her or even going yourself to educate eachother and seek support from others in the same situation as yourself). They have a live chat & a hot line that is run by healthcare professionals well versed in IBD M-F 9 am - 5 pm (EST).

Also, she should NOT be on any type of hormonal birthcontrol b/c when we flare due to inflammation, the blood tends to become sticky thus clotting. When you add a hormone in the blood, it will cause a DVT, PE, or even a stroke. I learned about this after my stroke 2 yrs. ago (I don't take hormones, my husband & use NFP b/c it's safe & won't interfere w/my meds). The first thing all of the doctors asked me were "are you on the pill? if so, that is what caused the clot on your brain" since you are flaring. I told them no b/c I already knew it wasn't safe to take. Mind you, not all crohnies get clots but the risk does increase over 75% when the pill is taken. Not worth risking your life just because it will interfere w/certain medications & cause serious complications.

I highly recommend the educational meetings as well because they have drug reps, insurance reps, dieticians, surgeons, etc. come in for Q&A sessions.

My heart goes out to your girlfriend. I truly understand what she is going through. Feel free to email me if you have questions. She can do the same.

I hope this information helps out. I wish her a speedy remission.

Just be there to support her. Hold her, maybe make her dinner after her treatment so she can rest. You are a good person for even asking. She probably is just in pain and doesn't want to burden you with it. Sometimes us "women" hold it in rather then put it on our men. Best of luck to you and I wish her well.
I found a link for you to understand a little bit about it.

i have no answer but wanted to ask what the treatment is she gets every 8 weeks? My BIL has chrones and I would love to be able to tell him there is a way to treat it!
