If my daughter gets chickenpox?!

Question: I am a little worried, My daughter is 3 years old she goes to a day time nursery/play group, A child there as chickenpox is it best if my daughter catchers chickenpox at her age?
If she does catch chickenpox will i catch them too? I never had chickenpox when i were a child and i have heard its worst if you get it when your an adult. Will i be ok? I am at the moment 17 weeks pregnant should i go talk to my doctor about this?

I'll work backwards...Yes, talk to your OB about your chickenpox status. S/he can test you to see if you might have contracted it at some point without knowing. You do not want to catch this during your pregnancy. If you get it as an adult, you will most likely do fine. It is not necessarily more serious, it's just that adults remember these things and most kids don't. Chickenpox (or varicella, the medical term) is a respiratory virus and can cause serious pneumonia occasionally. You do have a chance of contracting varicella if your daughter gets it (it is highly contagious). She has a fairly good chance of catching it from someone with whom she is in close regular contact. It is not "best" to have it at any particular age, though, ideally a person wants to be immune prior to the possibility of getting pregnant. To achieve this, you can have your daughter immunized with Varivax, a very effective vaccination. That might avoid her getting it, you getting it, and having the baby inside you exposed. As long as she has not started breaking out in a rash, the vaccination can be effective. Call her and your physician about this soon.

You (DO NO)T want to be around children that have chickenpox while being pregnant at all. Their is a very high high risk factor if you are exposed to it. Please consult your doctor as soon as possible. I'm sure your doctor would want to know (ASAP) and would appreciate this information as well. As far as your daughter? It would be best that she get it over with at such a young age BUT? Not while you are with child. Please contact your doctor today and let him/her know that you may have been exposed. Good luck to you and your little family. :o)
