My son is being tested for Mild Cerebral Palsy...if he is diagnosed, what can I !

Question: he is 16 months right now.

Answers: he is 16 months right now.

My niece has mild cerebral palsy. She is a Hemiplegia (one leg/one arm). She was diagnosed around 16 months as well. There are so many levels of CP.

Depending on what type of brain injury he sustained, he may have a few developmental delays (never manifested with my niece...she's 8 now).

You can expect occupational and physical therapy to help stretch the muscles. He may experience a slight delay in walking and running; his foot may be raised when he is standing and relaxing; he may walk on his toes of the leg where the CP is present. You can expect serial casting to stretch the muscles; botox injections to losen and stretch the muscles (this works very well); a hand and leg brace (nothing to intrusive); when he gets to be toddler age, he may get tired more easily than the other children without CP only because the simple movements that we take for granted, require more effort and energy for children with CP.

Other than these small things, with mild CP, you can expect a normal child that is going to run, jump, and play just like the other kids...just maybe a tad bit slower.

Please feel free to email me through this site if you would like some support.

Take care and good luck!

honestly , you can expect your doctor to fill you in on that

Mild cerebral palsy indicates that the severity of the brain damage suffered was only significant enough to cause slight impairment. The symptoms of mild cerebral palsy are subtler and not easily recognizable. In cases of mild cerebral palsy, symptoms are not as disruptive, and usually not apparent to the naked eye. Sometimes parents and doctors are less likely to realize that a child even has mild cerebral palsy. The parents usually detect mild cerebral palsy as children may begin to have trouble reaching more advanced developmental milestones because of physical complications.

Because mild cerebral palsy is seldom detectable, early intervention is difficult. However with earlier detections of mild cerebral palsy, corrective treatment can prove to be highly effective. In the instance of toe walking, for example, a plastic boot can help to train the motor skills and alleviate the problem. Sometimes mild cerebral palsy can affect the arms in subtle ways. A child with mild cerebral palsy may have trouble lifting heavier objects with a certain hand. However, the same child with mild cerebral palsy may have no difficulty writing with a pencil. The same muscles are used for both tasks, but the brain has trouble sending the message for one of them.

Mild cerebral palsy can be more severe than other cases of cerebral palsy, in the sense that some won
