yes u can develop diabetes later on in life.. maybe durin ur mid - 30s or 40s... the % of risk increases if it has always been in ur family (if ur dad inherited it from sum1 of his blood-relation).

Infact now tht u r pregnant, u may develop it temporarily towards the end of ur pregnancy. But tht wont stay aftr ur pregnancy.. it will go in 4-6 months time.

However, genetically inherited diabetes dsnt have a precautionary measure.. u can only delay it by gud eating habits, eating right and exercising.. thts wht i hv observed, (coz else, my mum is a head nurse with working experience of over 25 yrs and an extremely vast and accurate medical knowledge.. and she wud definitely temme my way out.. coz both - my mum and dad - have diabetes and it runs in most of my maternal and paternal family)...

U can only keep it controlled once u develop it... reducing ur sweets now wont help or act as a precaution... bt once u get diabetes, u wud need to strike out all sweets frm ur diet...
nyways.. do not wry (abt urself and the little one).. and i hope u don't get diabetes in the future.. Just always eat and stay healthy.. Good day :)

Yes, it is possible. Diabetes tends to run in families, and can appear at any age. Know what the risk factors are, eat a healthy diet, and exercise to reduce the chance that you may develop it.

Yes, you can have Diabetes later in life even though you were fine when you were younger. Just because your father has it, doesn't mean you will, there is just a higher chance.

It is not a definate that you will get it. The fact that it runs in your family increases your risk of developing it but so do a lot of other factors. Weight, exercise, smoking.... These things will also increase your chances of developing diabetes. Check out: http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp for more info. And also I suggest point your dad to this website:
http://www.dlife.com/
It's a great site for support, recipes, local shops that have sugar free items, and things of that nature.

Try to eliminate the avoidable causes of diabetes.
Causes of Diabetes.
(1) Hereditary factors.(parents, brothers & sisters having diabetes.
(2) Overweight & belly stomach.
(3) Over 45 years of age.
(4)Ethnic community more susceptible for diabetes.
(5) Women who had gestational diabetes and those who had delivered a baby having a weight more than 4 Kg.
(6) High Blood Pressure.(above 140/90 mm Hg)
(7) Persons having high triglycerides level.
(8) Persons having high cholesterol in the blood.

Having a person in the family does indeed give you added chance of developing diabetes in the future. It is a defective gene and is inherited.

You would be smart to have full physical including A1c testing every year for the rest of your life. This would catch the rise in A1c before it can do much damage to your bod.

A1c is the percentage of glucose molecules clinging to red blood cells instead of doing their job of fueling your muscles. Over 5.5 is a danger zone.

Have a healthy happy baby and a healthy happy mom!!

my father has diabetes
and I was diagnosised when i was 24 with diabetes
so yes you can get it

when I was pregnant i lost 80 pounds in the first 2 trimesters but in the final one i gained close to 100 pounds. The entire time the doctors couldn't detect diabetes, it wasn't until 2 years later that they realized that I had diabetes and that was when I was hospitalized for sugar levels at 42

so you need to be really careful and if you do get ( which you will) then its easily controlled through diet and exercerise but to prevent it, stay below your normal healthy weight by 2-5 pounds :D
