Nodules in the right lobe of my thyroid, multi question inquiry?!

Question: OK... I just had an ultrasound of my thyroid. The quote from the doc: multiple nodules in the right lobe and an increased number of blood vessels in the thyroid gland. There were also calcifications.

I just recently had genetic testing for this thing called Cowden's syndrom, a genetic marker that makes you predisposed to harmatomas(sp?) and increases your risk for thyroid, endometrial, and breast cancer. They say I have Cowden's. I've already had breast cancer and thyroid problems.

What are the chances that my nodules are a tumor?
I know cancer can't be diagnosed without a biopsy, but I'm being given a choice. Do a biopsy first or just have the whole thyroid removed?
Are there any alternatives to surgery?

Just looking for opinions.

This is just my opinion....
You say you've had a history or cancer before, although you haven't had a biopsy yet and the doc is giving you an option to do a thyroidectomy, I would go along with the procedure.
A biopsy before the removal of your thyroid wouldn't hurt either. Is there a reason why you couldn't have the biospy before the thyroidectomy for a more definitive diagnosis?

I'm not saying this because I think they are tumors but it sounds like your thyroid is already compromised. In addition, My feelings are, if appears or gives the impression of anything remotely close to cancer, is to remove it and treat it aggressively for people who have had a prior history of cancer. The reason for my logic is to hopefully prevent any type of metastizes.

I hope my opinion can help in some way. Take care.

Five years ago I had some of the same stuff happening to me. I ended up with pappalary cancer with folicular tendencies (what ever that means) I had a total thyroidectomy.
Make sure if they biopsy you that you insist that they do it under an ultrasound. They did my first one without that and I had to have it repeated. It is not all that pleasant and I was pretty ticked when they had to do it again.
Don't stress too much I have been fine since and they say that this is the most curable kind of cancer that there is. I have noticed a big difference in my life too. My skin was crazy before and so was a lot of other things in my life. Now I seem to be back to normal.
I guess what I'm saying is even if you decide to have your whole thyroid removed it takes a little time but you heal pretty fast (you can't even see my scar anymore) Once your meds are adjusted right life can be good.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. I know how scary it can be. I'll let you in on all of the tricks I've found out. You take care!!! Christine

The thyroid biopsy was more painful then the total thyroidectomy! I agree with the previous writer when he stated that you already have had cancer and your thyroid already has problems. I had multiple thyroid nodules in both lobes and but no history of cancer. I waited until my thyroid hormone levels went hyperactive and then elected to have have my thyroid removed. The surgery went well and I have had no complications since. (it is over 3 yrs ago) I hope that you will be ok.
