Does this seem like a lot of penicillin too you ?!

Question: I have been to the doctors this morning and diagnosed with an ear infection and the beginnings of tonsilitus.

The doctor gave me ear drops, and penecillin tablets. They are 250mg, and i have to take two, four times a day according to the front of the packet.

That's 8 tablets a day! plus ear drops, plus nurofen for pain .

Does that seem like alot to anybody else??

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds quite a reasonable prescription to me. I've often had to take larger doses of antibiotics than that myself ... 500 mg four times a day, and, on occasion, 1,000 mg (1 gramme) four times a day.

You don't mention what type of ear drops your doctor has prescribed, but it may be that that's another type of antibiotic in an attempt to combat the infection that you have from the outside too.

Obviously, the nurofen is for pain that you may be experiencing with either your ear infection or your tonsilitis.

If you have any doubts, I'd advise that you phone your GP's surgery and ask to speak to him/her. You could ask whether you actually need all that s/he has prescribed.

It's important that you do complete the course of antibiotics as if you don't do that the bacteria that's causing the infection will adapt and become more resistant to antibiotic treatment. I'm presuming that you really want the infection to go away and not return.

It will be to catch the infection before it travels through your body. If you are unsure though, contact your doctor just to double check.

Call the surgery and ask to speak to your doctor and tell him you think it's a lot to take and he'll give you advice

im, a medic in my 3rd year and am able to saY that i THINK there is a tyoing error it should be "take one four times a day" so i think you should go back to him just incase,

Hi,
No, that is a very standard prescription for ear infection with tonsilitus, your GP has prescribed well and you should be feeling better within a day or two.

once i had to take 8 antibiotics / day to a very very bad tonsillitis, it wasn't penicillin though as i am allergic, so i would say yes its possible that it is the right amount

if still in doubt call ur pharmacy for a peace of mind

wish u speedy recovery

To me, without the extra 'o' it is exactly the correct dose, 500mgs 4 times a day for 10 days, sometimes 1 gm is used. It is fortunate that your doctor went to medical school and they suggested a few useful things while he was there, such as the correct doses of medication. You I assume have signed up for the new McDonald's A'Level.
