Question about Azithromycin tables? (z-pack)?!

Question: I went to the doctor on Monday with an extremely sore throat, a bad cough, runny nose, and a fever.

She did a swab to check for strep, and it came back negitive.

She prescribed me Azithromycin Tablets. I've never taken them before.

I looked on the internet and it says that they dont treat a cold/flu... so Im kind of wondering.

I will admit, my throat isnt as painful as it was but my cough inst going away. Should I be concered because I only have 1 pill left. Like Im not coughing up anything, its just dry and it hurts and NOTHING is helping. I've wasted SO much money on cold/flu meds bc it honeslty feels like the azithromycin isnt doing anything either.

After tomorrow (my last pill to take) if Im still coughing do I go back to the doctor and ask for something else?

It sounds like you have an upper respiratory tract infection, possibly due to the common cold. Azithromycin is an antibiotic often used to treat bacterial respiratory tract infections. It does not treat the flu or common cold - these are caused by viruses. It is common to develop reactive airways disease after a respiratory tract infection, even if the infection is cleared. You may experience a dry cough for up to 2 months after the cold. If the cough is severe, your doctor may prescribe a bronchodilator (such as albuterol) or a cough suppressant (such as Hycodin). Also, consider using a humidifier.

It sounds like your doctor prescribed it because you may have an upper respiratory infection. Take them, your doc did not give them to you for no reason. You have to let the infection work its way out of your system

It sounds like it was most likely viral. If you have a true viral infection like a cold or influenza, antibiotics are not going to help. With the type of med you are on now, it will continue to work for 5 days after you stop taking it. So unless you are much worse I wouldnt rush back to the doctor.

The doctor probably prescribed this medication for bronchitis which is an inflammation of your airways and as a preventative against turning into a secondary pneumonia. Most cases of bronchitis are viral in nature and no antibiotics will make it better. It will get better on its own time frame. People always think antibiotics will help with all illnesses and they expect a prescription from their doctor and he provided you with one. Hopefully, you are taking some sort of cough medication, tylenol or ibuprofen on a regular basis for the sore throat/chest hurting when coughing; running a humidifier in the bedroom where you sleep and increasing your water intake which thins the secretions and helps decrease the coughing a little. Another trick is to put Vicks on the bottoms of your feet at night, cover your feet with socks. It also helps stop the cough - don't know why but it works. Expect bronchitis to take a couple of weeks, up to a month to go away which is a normal time frame for this illness.

coughing isn't caused by the bacterium its due to the mucous secretions that are excreted by your body. if the cough doesn't go away doesn't mean that the infections hasn't been treated, if you still see greenish mucous from nasal discharge then you should talk to your doctor. otherwise you should just stick to straight mucinex or mucinex-d(behind the counter in the pharmacy), and inhale steam if you want, it should help drain the nasal passages. if you have high blood pressure you shouldn't be taking the mucinex-d. if you want some medicine for the cough i believe you can talk to your doctor. thats about it basically good luck with that problem.

I took Azithromycin when I had tonsillitis which is probably what you have and why your doctor prescribed that. It helped me so I don't know why it isn't helping you but I think you should go back tomorrow to the dr. and get a stronger med.......every body is different and you may need something stronger. Hope you feel better soon!
