Some medications used for depression or anxiety can also be used to help you sleep. Desyrel (trazadone) is an antidepressant and Xanax (alprazolam) is an antianxiety. Both of these can be taken at bedtime to help you sleep. Medications specifically for insomnia such as Ambien and Lunesta are generally used just for this reason. I don't know of any other reason a person would use either one of these.
There are many medications that have side effects that are useful for sleeping, and those medications are used as sleeping pills. Antihistamines, trazadone, etc.
But sleeping pills don't have any other uses. They make you sleep. That's it.
