Moodiness with chantix? please help.?!

Question: My boyfriend started taking chantix last week and is very stand-offish he's been getting agitated easily and doesn't seem to want to do much...we've never had these problems before...could it be the chantix? And anything I could do to help him? I want him to quit smoking and I don't want to blame the medicine...bc then he might just think I'm blaming him as he thinks we are having problems...which we have been since this medication started.

The warnings on Chantix were Depression,Suicide,Weird dreams..My husband tried this and it did work alittle but he got so depressed he actually cried . This was NOT normal for him as he's always been strong emotionally. 2nd time in 11 yrs he' cried and he wanted to quit he job which he loves..

anytime someone quits smoking it is going to be tough for a while. My boyfriend also took chantix and was grumpy, and I was trying to quit cold turkey, but unsucessful, we were both too grumpy and got mad at eachother so easily.

The withdrawal from the nicotine could be the problem rather than the chantix. Anyone who goes through any kind of withdrawal is irritable. Stopping smoking is no piece of cake and I would give him some slack. I would not be pushing any kind of relationship problems on him right now - he has enough to cope with and you want him to be successful in stopping smoking. Give him 6 weeks and then re-evaluate your situation.

ya it is possible, more and more new studies are showing mental side effects with the drug. Chantix stops people from smoking by affect neurons. That's why there is a new warning about chantix and suicide risk. But usually these symptoms take a few weeks to show up. But this also can be the nicotine wihdrawal. the more he smoked and the length can increase the withdrawal symptoms. I would say right now it might just be the withdrawal affecting him. Generally it can last from a couple days to a couple weeks
