Yes, your friend's doctor is right. Contraceptive pills can cause blood clot in lungs (better known as Pulmonary Embolism). There are some persons more prone to that, like people having some defect/ deficiency in clotting profile known as antiphospholipid syndrome.

It can be fatal, my Dad and Granada both died of this and i suffered with clots in both lungs after having surgery, i do believe that's why they give you them sexy stockings prior to surgery to help prevent it occurring, There are different reasons for it happening, but in my case it was immobility following major surgery

The blood clots don't form in the lungs, they generally start from an injury/operation site, or in someone who is bedridden and cannot move about too much. I have suffered from recurrent Pulmonary Embolisms (blood clots in the lung) since 2001 and I have been hospitalised twice, the first time for 2 weeks the second for 1 week. I am now on Warfarin for life. Blood clots can be life threatening unless treated.
Warfarin- makes the blood less 'sticky' and allows it to flow more freely.
