My friends son, five years old, will sit and rock, hitting his head against the wall. Not hurting himself, like he's enjoying it.
He doesn't talk, smiles all the time and doesn't seem to see anyone, like a deer in the headlights stare. Sad.
i just bought a magazine today that has a really good article on autism that you should check out. It is a special edition of scientific american about the body. the cover has a title about autism. it might answer many of your questions.
