Blood sugar 467... how dangerous?!

Question: My father has diabetes and takes his medication every day but doesn't watch what he eats or check his sugars. He had a liver transplant in 2003 and shortly after developed diabetes which is common. His anti-rejection drugs are taxing on his liver as is the diabetes so it upsets me very much that he doesn't take care of himself. He has received three different machines and strips to test his blood sugar but loses them all the time. My mother got him a machines and test strips from a woman who doesn't need hers anymore at church this morning and when he tested his blood sugar it was 467! He said the machine must be wrong so I tested mine and it was 103 which is normal. I say he needs to go to the emergency room since his doctor is not around on a Sunday. I don't think this should wait until tomorrow. What do you guys think? How dangerous is a blood sugar of 467?

Yes, that is a very high number!! He should probably go to the ER or his doctor.

He really does need to watch his food better. You and your mother need to keep only the foods in the house that are good for him. They are good for both of you also.

I feed everyone here at the ranch the foods that I can eat. If they want something else, they need to go elsewhere to get that junk and it is 50 miles to somewhere else!!

The steroids he is taking for antirejection have a bad effect on attempts to control glucose numbers!! It is really hard to balance these things.

His doctor is also remiss not to be having closer watch on these things.

But your dad will probably call you "Diabetes Police" and be really ticked. Until he loses some precious parts of himself, toes, foot, fingers, hand, eyes; he will not take any better care of himself. He is in the land of DeNile and doesn't want to help himself. You can lead a horse to water, and you can argue for ever with alcoholic, but until these people want to take control, they won't!! And most wind up in the dialysis unit at the hospital, sad and sorry!!!

yeah this is wayy dangerous I agree he should get checked asap and wouldn't wait till tomorrow.. make him go with you now I don't care how stubborn he is

I think he should take his medication: has the doctor ever told him something like "If you find more than 400, then take this dose of this medication...", anything like that?
If not, then he should call a doctor and ask what to do; since it's Sunday he can go to the emergency room.

Anyway, even if he waits until tomorrow, don't worry: it's not so urgent. If you fear for his life, don't worry: one could live weeks even with high sugar levels. Even much more if one takes medication.
Anyway it's not healthy, because too much sugar damage the body, but this happens in the long run, not just in a few days.

The dangerous thing is the fact taht he doesn't control diet and sugar levels seriously: his may make him develop problems to eyes, feet...

if he has type 2 diabetes i am not sure, but if it is type one it is on the high side which could cause problems. if he is not responsible enough i would consider getting a visiting nurse to make sure he is taking care of him self

That's pretty dang bad. over 200 is risky, if mine gets above 280 I start puking. He needs an insulin shot asap I think.

Keep talking to him and reminding him how sugar is not good for him. Buy him some Splenda.

Very

Yes I Agree Get Him To The Hospital ASAP
