How long will it take to recover from a severe asthma attack?!

Question: I had a severe attack the other day and was brought to the ER. Was given 2 treatments of a nebulizer, oxygen and prednisone. Was sent home from the hospital within 2 hours.

I take Symbicort, Singulair, Spiriva and Albuterol. Also was put on a 5 day dosage of prednisone. Woke up in the middle of the night with another wheezing attack but it calmed down. Chest still hurts a little. My voice is diminishing and I've been coming down with a cold.

This is the 3rd day since the ER incident. How long will it take to recover and feel completely better?

I had the very thing happen a few months ago. It took me about five good days before I felt really decent again. If your coming down with a cold it could take longer because that could also effect your asthma. That's how mine flaired up in the first place. You might need a longer dose of prednisone. If your still in bad shape after your prednisone is gone go back or call the doctor and tell him things are not cleared up. My doctor gave me a longer dose and it cleared up. Try to take care of that cold though. The faster your over that the better off you'll be. Good Luck

I know exactly what you are going through. I had a severe asthma attack a few years back and was sent to the ER for 3 hours. It took me from that day about a week and a half to calm my cough down. Then after that i caught the flu. It was strange. If you feel that you are catching something, you should go to the doctor. Sever asthma attacks do a lot of weird things to your body. See a doctor, so the infection doesn't get worse and you catch pneumonia or something serious like that.

I would call your doctor. The prednisone should be kicking in by now..72 hrs is the max time and if no improvement then you probably need a stronger dosage and for longer. My son with a severe flare (he is 27 now!) gets 100 mgs initially then 30 mgs twice a day for 7 days then drops 10 mgs off a day until down to 0.
