I Have hiatus hernia and have cut down on bread any good substitute?!

Question: A Hiatus Hernia is where part of the eosophagus and maybe the stomach protude through the diaphagm into the thoracic (chest) cavity due to a tear or weakness in the diaphragm. This may cause reflux (acid coming up the oesophagus), heart burn and pain.
This can be caused by obesity, hereditary reasons, pregnancy smoking or stress.
This can be confirmed by an endoscopic examination of the upper GI tract. A scope is passed down the eosophagus into the stomach and the doctors can see what is occuring.

This can be reapired surgically if need be through a proceedure called a Nissan Fundoplication.

The thing with the bread may be due to a related condition called Gastric dumping syndrome. "Late" gastric dumping is associated with carbohydrate consumption. So this may be why you were told to cut out bread.

Crackers are good. I don't eat bread, but crackers are a good substitute.

Brown rice is a healthy carb- much healthier than bread. White basmati is good too, but not as healthy as brown rice.

Rice cakes if they have enough topping......my father finds pineapple juice quite good, not on rice cakes obviously!

I had a " hiatus hernia " that was fixed at " Frenchey Hospital " in Bristol 6 years ago. It does need redoing as the patch that they fitted over the hole has come off.

I can't remember the Doctors telling me NOT to eat Bread...

In-fact they just told me to cut down on all food for 3 to 4 weeks then go back to normal.....

Can you please tell me why you are worried about BREAD ????

There is something found in Indian stores. Called Sattu. It is roasted and then ground chick pea.

Take 2 spoons of it and mix with cool milk and have every morning.
Also increase quantity of that. Helps absorb acids.

Later in day, have it with yogurt too.

You can also make it into dough and make small cakes and have it.
Have crackers that have whole wheat .
