Can a beta blocker cause weight gain?!

Question: I'm on a 50 mg dose of metoprolol, and I have gained weight since I have been on it. I have been very careful (keeping a food journal and exercising) since I have been on it..is there any way the medicine itself can cause weight gain? I cannot go off of it, is there ANYTHING I can do? Please help.

Of course: the adrenaline activates the metabolism; the Beta-blocker reduces the adrenaline effects and reduces the thyroid function, the metabolism drops. So, a weight gain is logical. Help: increase your metabolism e.g. by algae like kelp, eat enough sea fish and move a lot.

Gaining weight is a side effect of most drugs

Beta blocker can make your weight increase. Since you are on this medication, I would suggest you to consult your doctor first before you start exercise.

I have been on one for years and it has not caused me to gain weight. Have you asked your doctor about this? Also, are you retaining water in your body? That might be the cause of your weight gain. If you are, you need to talk to your doctor about that also.
