OK, this sounds really gross (and truly, it is), but it's the only way I was able to get rid of it when 4 of my kids came down with it (and the only way I could afford to).

Get a jar of mayo and completely saturate the hair with it. Pile on top of her head, and wrap tightly with a grocery bag. (Secure with bobby pins or clothespins). Leave on the head at least one hour. Shampoo 3-4 times to remove the greasy mayo. Comb through hair with a lice comb.

If you use this method, you will need to repeat 3-4 times every three days, as it will not smother all of the nits. In the meantime, try to keep her hair slightly "dirty"... contrary to what people tend to think, lice only like clean hair... the products that are put in hair make it hard for nits to "get a grip" on the hair and stay put. Put gel or hairspray in her hair every morning, to keep it from being too clean.

Treat everything else in your house... anything washable needs to be washed at the highest heat setting and dried at the highest heat, as well. Anything that can't be washed needs to be tightly sealed in a plastic bag (trash bags work well) for at least 14 days.

Good luck! It's a tough thing to get rid of, but with proper treatment, it will eventually be gone.

First of all, you need to wash everything that her hair came into contact with in HOT water. Her bedsheets, her clothing, etc. Spray your fabric covered furniture with something that kills lice (google that to get the right product). You can get a prescription strength lice shampoo from your doctor.

Here's a tip: Lice will not survive the heat from a blow dryer. Everyone in your family needs to be treated, then blow dry everyone's hair with the hot setting.

Hi Kristy:
I have 2 teenage daughters and they have really long hair. They both got lice last year.
The only thing that is guarinteed to work is to remove every single live lice and every single nit by hand.
It is no fun.
I got a pair of strong reading glasses from Wal-mart $20 I thing they are 75% (the glasses range in magnification from 25% to 75% so I got the strongest ones.
I also got a small bright light that I could hold in one hand, it's a clip to the bedpost kind of lamp with a small but bright light.

I keep a bowl of water near by and when I catch one I put my fingers in the water.
When you are finished you'll see lots of nits and adult lice in the dish.
Now these lice are becoming tolerant to the shampoo's, Teetree oil stinks, so I just change lice shampoo's.
With this last strain of lice the Shoppers drugmart lice shampoo did work, but I still removed every single nit (egg) and adult lice from thier heads.
I washed all the sheets and that was sufecient.
I also told every single mom and dad who had contact with my kids that they were infected.
Working together with 4 difrent families we were able to get rid of that menace. But it took the whole summer.
I volunteered for lice duty and checked all the adults heads, they were all clean, and just as presaution us adults used the lice shampoo the same day all the kids used it.
Good luck, it's not an easy or nice job.
