Do I have SVT (superventricular tachycardia), or palpitations?!

Question: Yesterday I experienced what can best be described as a sudden sensation of my heart unexpectedly jumping into my throat, beating there, and rising to about 100BPM. Now from what I understand of SVT that isn't fast enough, but the feeling was uncomfortable. It was not painful in any way, but the sensation was unnerving. I laid down for a few minutes and it subsided. The pulse stayed fast, but the beating in the throat went away. So is this just a case of palpitations? Also, this has occurred probably three times within the last 9 months. Anyone else go through anything like this?

If they're coming and going, and there isn't a precipitating factor, it could run the gambit from anxiety, to thyroid problems (which could cascade and become life threatening) to pregnancy (unless you're not already female). You don't have to run to the doctor, but you should make an appointment (one preferably sooner rather than later) to have it checked out.

ps, if you're older, smoke like a chimney or take birth control pills, there are a few other things that it could be, but we'll leave the list a that---and go see your doctor!!

you are right, it isn't fast enough to be SVT. It is simply tachycardia, and if you were not doing strenuous activity, I'll bet it was a simple panic attack.

There can be alot of reasons this happens, one is external meaning caffiene or other stimulants, it could be your thyroid, or your heart. papitations or svt is caused by irregular signal given to the sa node which controls the heartbeat. first and foremost see a doctor ASAP OR THE ER. I had a similiar problem turned out to be too much caffiene. but a girlfriend of mine had this and it was her thyroid. plus they found a blockage in her heart. which the palpitations was another issure that actually saved her live. so please see a dr now.

I do believe you need a cardiologist to answer these questions in conjunction with several diagnostics test to be taken

You are definitely experienceing palpitations, but what they are caused by could be anything. SVT can cause the sensation of palpitations but so can other types of arrhythmias. If this is something that you experience multiple times you should go see your doctor and they will check out an EKG to determine what types of arrhythmia you are experiencing. It could be nothing to be worried about but there is also the chance that it is something more serious.
I would recommend going into the doctor and letting them know what is going on. Can't help much more without knowing your history and meds and everything, but an EKG would probably be a good idea to try to determine what is causing these palpitations.

Don't go the some blockhead on the internet for answers to serious medical problems. Some jerk could give you an answer that could put you in danger. GO SEE OR CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!!!
