Why do they blame every thing on smoking?!

Question: just about a year ago, I had surgery. I contacted a infection. The doctor refused to see the infection. I had to go see another doctor to get it treated. I am being told by my lawyer that it all boils down to is that I refused to stop. How can this even be fair to me. My smoking did not cause my infection nor did it cause the doctor not to see it. Whats up with that crap? What on earth should I do? This doctor needs to be stoped. Any suggestions?

i am a smoker and i believe it does cause some health issues...infections aint one of them...i believe that doc needs to go back to med school..

They blame everything on being fat too...

Get a new lawyer. And get better medical documentation about the infection from an outside source and someone who has examined you.

stop smoking see if they infection is still there if it is theres your proof if it is still there it might have been from smoking

You are running against the tide of statistical data that "they" have been collecting for years.

A lot of Doctor's are refusing to take patients who smoke. It's their right. You will just have find a Primary Care Physician who will take you as is. A lot of things are caused by smoking........and you really should give it up...but you already know that. Good luck.

Did the doctor tell you you had to stop smoking? A good doctor would have.

Smoking affects your circulation and the oxygenation of your blood. That greatly affects your ability to heal. It also lowers your immune system, which makes you more prone to infections. So while the smoking did not cause your infection, some bacteria caused it, it made the situation much worse and put you at a higher risk for infection and poor healing. That makes it much harder for your doctor to treat you, and can cause complications for which a patient will blame the doctor (when it is the patient's fault for not doing all that is necessary to facilitate good healing and health).

The doctor can refuse to see you. Many surgeons refer their patients to specialists in infection control if an infection should occur. Infection is a risk of surgery....you were informed of that on the consent form you signed before you had the surgery performed.

You need to take responsibility for your own health. I'm afraid you can't blame the doctor for not wanting to care for a patient who truly doesn't care about optimum health.

Cigarette smoking is a substantial risk factor for important bacterial and viral infections. For example, smokers incur a 2- to 4-fold increased risk of invasive pneumococcal disease.Mechanisms by which smoking increases the risk of infections include structural changes in the respiratory tract and a decrease in immune response. That is the reason why you've been told to stop smoking right after surgery. But this should not be a reason for refusing to see or treating the infection that ensued. Every attending physician should take good care of his patient especially during post operative procedures. Seek a legal counsel if you are thinking of a legal battle, BUT, if there is substantial evidence that SMOKING really was responsible for the infection and you have been told to stop it in the first place, the case might be dropped for CONTINUING NEGLIGENCE ON YOUR PART.I suggest to always follow your doctor's orders next time and maybe it would be better if you see another doctor whom you'll be more open to and confident and who will be more understable also about your situation.
